  • GM Diesel regen exhaust process melting corners of RVs?!

My wife is part of one or tow of the Grand Design Facebook groups and she showed me a photo of someone's 5th Wheel that had the lower front passenger side corner damaged and surface melted due to the Diesel regeneration process of the GM exhaust cleaning system. The photo looked pretty bad but did not appear to have caught fire. The poster said it happened when pulling the camper in the mountains and the regen process started while towing. The regen process can put out some substantial heat during the process. Has anyone ever heard of the regen melting or burning a 5th wheel camper before? Is it unique to GM where the exhaust faces to the rear vs. to the side? The poster did not say if he had done any exhaust mods. The damaged areas is also where the LP tanks are too - yikes! I thought about an exhaust mod to turn my exhaust tip to the side but manual says not to do that and would void warranty. During some other research online we saw a few other described incidents from GM owners.

A side note - During our trip to OBX last week I was driving (unhitched) in my 2022 GMC 3500 when I got a "Exhaust Filter Cleaning - Must Keep Driving" message on my dash with a 4 tone alert. Well, after driving up and down Hwy 158 for over 100 miles to try and clear it, I went to a dealer in NC the next day and the shop manually did the regen and reset the message. I have not had any issue since then and towed back to Virginia just fine. Owners online have had this issue and effects range from the truck going into "limp mode" then shop repairs, check engine lights & shop, to my lesser issue of it not completing the regen, or completing the regen and sensors not resetting. Any other 20-23 GM diesel owners having trouble on the regen?

I have only had my 22 Chevy since February, bought used, and have not had any regen issues, so far.

On this truck and my previous truck I did the side exit exhaust tip made by MBRP, it is not quite straight out the side more towards the bumper corner. I had 106k miles on the previous truck, 2015 year, with no issues, I will expect the same from this truck. The exhaust tips does not change or hurt the exhaust path that I have seen. I have a hitch mudflap set that comes almost to the end of the bumper and there is a little heat deformation where the exhaust hits the flap, barely noticeable. I chose the angled exhaust tip because I tow a few different bumper pull trailers and when hooking up the exhaust is not fun to stand by. I do not understand why GM does this, just because probably.

We had a 2020 1 ton dually for several years. Now have a 2023, same truck basically. I do have some slight distortion in that plastic piece caused by the 2020 but nothing close to the FB post that I also saw.
I do know someone who did have to replace that corner moulding though. They have a 2020 as well and had a regen while towing through the BC, Canada mountains.
We have never noticed any regen messages or noticed any change in performance with either the 2020 or the 23.

I did the banks exhaust as well, side dump so it mixes with the passing air lowering temps much faster.

As for the regen, from what I understand if the regen does not complete within X number of key cycle it will trip the alert. Once you get the alert, it's something like 70 miles of driving at highway speeds to clear. I try to do a manual regen with the Banks iDash when towing the trailer as this is the best chance of keeping the exhaust temps up high enough for a good burn off.

My iDash is a monitor only, truck is stock tuned.

I've had several GMC diesels in the last 17 years and never had issues with any of them or their exhausts, but I leave everything stock. My new 2022 now has nearly 8K miles on it pulling our campers up through the CO and MT mountains with no issues or hot exhaust affecting the camper. I do use the long-extended mud flap system as others have noted and I have added diamond plate to the back side of the rubber flap where the exhaust exists for wearability. Personally, I have to wonder if the truck tune was altered for the ones that have had heat issues affecting the camper? Here in CO, many have made their diesel trucks "foggers" which just pours raw fuel out the exhaust and increases EGTs. I've pulled side by side with friends who have those foggers in the mountains and have always made it to the top of the mountains faster with the stock tune than those who have been altered but to each his own.

Imo, angle the exhaust to the side like all the other brand trucks. There is no way that would cause a problem re warranty
I'd be surprised if regen was triggered by key cycles though, I always thought it was by differential pressure.

As I have had time to think about the exhaust issue, I seem to remember there being some comments on regen while idling and the front corners of campers seeing heat distortion.
