  • House prep for long trip

Hi there. My wife and I are taking a 4 month RV trip this summer and will be leaving our brick and morter house unoccupied for this time period. I'd love to here from some of you travel veterans on how you've made sure your house stays in order until you return. Mail, pool, remote home tech to assist, etc....Thank you.

Be sure to check with your home insurance to understand what they require. We monitor our home continuously with online cameras but have to have regular physical visits to meet insurance requirements.

For our month long Alaska trip we hand a neighbor check in daily - mainly to feed our outside cat. I turn the water off to the washer dryer and toilets, but left the rest on so neighbor could get water for the cat, otherwise I would turn everything off. Power stays on. I usually stop mail, but they only hold for 3 weeks then stuff the box.. I also call my credit cards to indicate we will be traveling so you don't get flagged as fraud use. Auto bill pay helps in some cases, but we used email notification and then paid using the online banking feature at our bank, There are some mail services that can forward mail if you know you will be in a spot for long.. I suggest looking at some of the full timer information that is out there.

If your traveling out of country, check if you credit cards charge a transition fee. BOA does Discover and Capitol one do not, but that can change. Also check cell phone coverage if out of country. Also check health insurance coverage if out of country - And Car insurance coverage.

      Safe travels

Your toilet bowls may dry up being gone that long. I would have someone stop by once a month or sooner to at least flush the toilets. Dry toilets may leave unwanted stink into your house, yucky.

You can cling wrap the toilet to prevent evaporation. In your freezer, freeze a glass of water. When you leave put a penny on top of the ice. If when you get back the penny is not at the top you know a power outage lasted a long time...and maybe the food is no good.
I like having a 'smart' t-stat as well. I can check the temp of the house from time to time. Know the furnace or A/C is working properly.

Trip > 1 month. Water heater off, water off (main), internet-enabled t-stat & lawn sprinkler controller, neighbor collects mail, toilets shrink-wrapped (bleach in bowl), all reachable powered items in house unplugged, all outside "stuff" secured, lawn mx contracted (he's also my emergency "fix it" POC), key to house in lock box (emergency access), multiple checklists (Departure-30, D-7, D-3, D-1, D-0) so nothing is overlooked.
