Is it safe to run Honda 2000i generators in truck bed?

    Is it safe to run Honda 2000i generators in truck bed?

    I have been researching this for a while ( finding a lot of differing opinions) and I am wondering how safe it is to rung generators in the truck bed.



    I have 2 Honda 2000i's set up with the 30A adapter / parallel kit. With my bad back it will be difficult to move them in and out of the bed. So I got thinking can they be run in the open truck bed, The exhaust is out the back so I would need to keep that area clear - but how far? They will be sitting on a Bedrug impact bed mat and chained/ locked in. I can put a section of cement board under them if needed. Location would be at the very back by the tailgate, which would be down when running.

    Thoughts?

    We used to run them 4 at a time in UTV beds for 12 or more hours a day at work that way.

      I would do the same thing, leave it in the truck bed, just make sure the truck is away from the trailer, especially a fifth wheel, the fumes may collect up thru the overhang and enter the coach. Moving the generators closer to the shore power connection on the RV would mean a smaller wire would be needed for the connection to the RV, shorter and smaller gauge. A larger gauge may be needed at a longer distance to maintain voltage.

        Brian I had not thought of not running under the 5th wheel overhang - good point. I was going to use the std power cord, but I also have a 25' HD extension cord (10 to 12awg) that I carry. I got to thinking that with the solar and battery bank I have, I probably only need to take one - just in case. I can always move it (slide) out on the tale gate and point the exhaust away from the trailer too. Would that work if I am still hooked up?

        Hmmmmmm - that gives me and idea. I have a set of HD drawer brackets and some small ball casters. I could make a sliding tray to move it out .

          Yoda I do this all the time with no issue. Same bad back. I usually try to park so I can put the truck behind the rig, my power inlet is in the back for some reason, and usually if I'm using the generator I'm at a rally or boondocking and can park that way. I can say from experience to have the tailgate down. I had it up once to try and mitigate noise (with the cover open obviously) and the exhaust was too close to the tailgate and melted a bit of my Line-X lol.

            I also run my generator in the bed of the truck in much the same way. Since the plug connects at the back of our Imagine, I have a 25ft RV 30amp extension where this in addition to my OEM cord provides enough room to park at the front with the truck pointed away from the rig. If there is a light rain, I'll will leave the tonno cover on and have the generator just out the back with the exhaust pointed out toward the open tail gate.

              Timely discussion . . . I have been working on a plan to do this same thing for some travel plans this summer. But . . . . . I would like to leave the generator forward of the hitch . Has anyone done this? My plan is to set this up and "test" with lots of thermal reading from adjacent surfaces. I could run a large 120V fan adjacent to the generator to circulate cooling air.

                I've done that with no issue. My cover is a rigid tonneau (Bakflip) and the generator lives under the front panel so it's covered going down the road. I find most all of the heat projects out from the exhaust port (see my comment about the tailgate) so under the cover pointed aft works fine for me. Obviously I do this when unhooked for the above reasons.

                  Neil, one day when you have the generator set up as you describe, can you take a picture set up for use? I have a rolling tonneau and keep my 2500 under the cover close to the cab as well.

                    Sure I'll do that. Fyi I have the Champion but it should be similar. I flip up the stack of panels, start it and then lower them back down over it.

                      In hot weather, we plugged in a small fan to keep the driver and equipment operator cool when the rig was stationary. You could add one in the truck bed if needed.

                        If lifting the generator over or around the fifth wheel hitch is not an issue, a quality roll up cover provides unlimited flexibility. When I gave up my tri-fold cover I wondered if I would like the Truxedo model which was the same maker as the re-named OEM cover. I will never go back.

                          Guest I did the opposite, had a Truxedo on the last truck and went to a hard fold on this one. I like having the "shelf"when it's folded up to the last section to put things under out of the elements. On the long bed the stack gets a bit heavy, and im toying mentally with a canister roll up next time.

                            On my second truck with a Truxedo roll up. The first one is still looking pretty good after 8 years (my son now has that truck). I like being able to see out the back window of the cab with the tonneau cover fully retracted (rolled up).
