  • Need new cooler / Ice Chest for Alaska trip - Suggestions wanted!

SWMBO has approved my quest. I hope this is allowed, if not you have my bleassing to do what is needed.. So I am coming out of my corner - Yes be very afraid

I only have an 8 CF foot fridge with a small freezer, so I am thinking of extra Ice, keeping bottled water cold, and possibly some fish (starting out frozen) to bring home...if Canada and US allows. On my list is a successful Halibut trip (never caught one) out of Alaska or Canada if there is a difference, (Hint - suggestions on where and who).
I know Carol wont allow fish to stink up the fridge (nor do I ) unless sealed and frozen and I want cold water while driving - thus the crew cab for room for the chest. We have an old steel shelled Colman (80's vintage) that's in very rough shape. Red Green would be proud . So in a nut shell I need a new, good cooler with good ice retention which my old Colman lacked.

I believe I need something in the 70-110QT capacity - hopefully with wheels (I'm getting old) and good handles. I also want a good durable lid locking system, Ice retention (tested not advertised) ) is very important. Sorry it's the engineer in me. Improved drainage a plus but if it drains I am OK.

Reviews on brands are all over the place. It appears to be like the Ford - Chevy - Dodge, wars - everyone has thier favorite, I just need something that works, is durable and actually works....did I say that before...Darn CRS

So here is the ultimate question to life and everything ---------- yep its 42, but.............. What are the experts here using and any recommendations. I have most sellers in my area (I need to put miles on "HAL" anyway) if I need to leave Durango - which could be a good thing price wise.

    Thanks
    Keith

Keith, I have a Pelican. Not near as big as you want, but it will hold ice for days. Options at the time were Yeti, Rtic, Pelican, and one other. Got a deal on the Pelican, so went that way, plus I like the locks better than the other's rubber bands.

Biggest note on anything with good ice retention is they will be HEAVY. Rotomoulded plastic and foam ice chest are hard to beat when compared to the thin igloo style.

I'd love to have an old Coleman with the metal twist latch on the front. They just don't make them like that any longer.

Keith - You might also check with some of the guides and seafood processors in the area you'll be fishing. They may be able to clean, fillet, vacuum pack, freeze, and ship your catch to your home.

Another option is a portable fridge/freezer. We have a bodega. We have only used it as a freezer and when it is running
it stays a zero or a little less. It can be used as a refrigerator or even duel zone with the divider. One feature I like is the compressor
shuts down automatically when the pickup battery gets low. Sometimes the temp was up in the teens by morning. If I am not running the pickup
it can also be plugged into 120 volt

          Dometic CFX coolers
          https://www.dometic.com/en-us/outdoo...ectric-coolers

There are many brands that are the same, but I can easily get the CFX one's.. This was my primary cooler on my popup for 3 years. (Ran it off my Group 24 battery and a 100watt solar panel)

**EDIT: Compressor based is the way to go. stay away from Thermoelectric, or absorption.

Is anyone familiar with the Lifetime brand. Walmart has a 45Q one with wheels. Seems well built - not too pricey either.

I think the last one is most pertinent to your question.

Thanks for the links - good information.

Well to update this thread. After looking at a lot of reviews I ordered this one - should be in Sunday https://www.walmart.com/ip/Lifetime-...1072/767219216 Its not rotomolded, but fully insulated and has done very well in test and is within my budget. I can but a lot of ice for the price differance.

I know Yoda already got his ordered but for anyone else checking this thread, I also have 2 of the Coleman coolers posted by timh0042 and they may not be as good as some of the higher end options, they've been extremely solid and I am very happy with the value.

For information while at Wally world I also looked at this model side by side with the Lifetime https://www.coleman.com/coolers-drin...000005145.html It was a bit more clunky and cheaper wheels and reviews were not as good. It also tracked funny pulling it. Colman has this model https://www.coleman.com/coolers-drin...000006482.html That appears better made, but I could not find one to look at. I may be old school, but I like to see / feel before I buy. I could have gotten the Lifetime in stock, but I prefer untouched thats why I ordered. Should get it by the 7th.

I have been looking and kicking the tires so to speak for a while. Ill report back on how it works.
