  • Toaster oven outlet use

We are seeing a lot of folks using 1800W toaster ovens in their RVs. We are also interested in doing the same thing. Looking through GD FB forums and this forum has us wondering what outlets should you use for these toaster ovens? Jim from Guest quoted the following from another recent user question (Ceramic space heater usage) :

    “From Wirecutter.
Manufacturers advise against plugging space heaters into surge protectors, extension cords, plug timers, GFCI outlets (the kind with the test and reset buttons), or really anything that’s not a wall outlet. Those added layers of electrical connection can increase your chances of overloading the circuit, or they can create additional resistance that allows heat to build up, potentially resulting in a fire or other internal electrical damage.”

Would 1800W be pushing it with regards to amp usage? Is it as simple as using any outlet that is not GFCI? What should not be running in the RV when we want to use the toaster oven (we have a power pole surge protector but without a digital volt reader (50amp), so we don’t know what we are getting from the campground)?

We’ve also been looking at 1500W toaster ovens just to be electrically safer.

If you're on a 50 amp site you shouldn't need to watch any other appliances. Just do not plug in a toaster and also a coffee maker or crock pot or you'll probably trip a breaker in the rig if they're on the same circuit.

All of the outlets in the kitchen are probably GFCI, so you may not be able to avoid that. I have one that's on the underside of one of my cabinets that isn't, not sure if you'd have that or not. Just because the outlet does not have the test and reset button it could still be protected by an upstream GFCI, so keep that in mind.

1800 watts is the absolute maximum (without tripping) for a 15A 120vac breaker. So if anything else is on the same circuit, the breaker will trip.
The receptacles in your trailer are rated for 1800w, but after seeing the construction of them, I personally would never run an 1800w appliance in the trailer.

Edit..not as much of a concern if you are not running the toaster oven at max power though.
