  • How to Wrap a 50A Cord

Moderator Note: Post below extracted from https://gdrvowners.com/forum/operati...ed-50-amp-bulk and slightly edited as a standalone post. Thanks for the video, John! Very informative. -Howard

Most people I watch trying to coil a 50A cord don’t twist it properly as they coil it. If you don’t twist as you coil, the cable will twist in the coil making a mess. It’s a simple skill, but makes cable management much easier. I used to work with 100m sections of heavy coax, and if you didn’t coil them properly they were a mess. This video show the method I use

I use an over / under wrap technique as the ends sometimes hang up when trying to twist. This also means the cable will naturally uncoil and not need to be twisted at the end when un-coiling. This does take practice, and on the big 30A and 50A cables it looks like a mess.

I coil my 50-amp cord into a milk crate. Makes it easier to store.

My problem is when its below freezing and the cord and me are both not very flexible.

I replaced my oem cord with a Surge Guard flex cord when I changed to a SmartPlug. It is more flexible at low temp.

Nice on a carpet or finished floor but I have no intentions of dragging the plugs across dirt, mud, concrete, or gravel.

I keep my water hose and electrical cord in a front bay that is about 2.5' wide. I make big 4' loops and lay them over my skirting material. I also keep a rag nearby to clean the cable as I am coiling it. One thing I do watch for, no kinking. The loops are very big. Easy to do even when it's freezing.

One other thing I do is wrap it from the power pole so the surge protector does not get banged around on the ground while wrapping. the over under trick keeps the chord from wanting to knot if you are not careful when unwrapping and forgetting to twist since it's like dragging an anaconda.

Same way I was taught and have always done it this way for many a moons. I can still hear the person who taught me yelling, "No wiggles."
