  • Lug nut Replacement

I wanted to share my findings with these chrome-plated Lug nuts That came on my camper. After removing these to upgrade my brake assembly I discovered these cracks on the chrome caps. I have not noticed this before I had these tires replaced. My guess is they had too much pressure when putting these back on. This is an example of doing pre-maintenance / inspection on everything you touch on your trailer.

I removed all Lugnuts and replaced them with Stainless Steel.

From what I have experienced, the caps are notorious for cracking when impacts are used to remove or replace the lug nuts. The hammering at the corner causes the cover to stretch over time and crack.

Be glad one did not decide to come off inside the socket being used and become one with it. Yes this is a real thing and Yes it makes for a bad day especially if you are not at home with punches and hammer to drive it out. Oh yeah, lets not forget the top of that thing is paper thin and will let any device you use to try to push it out straight through like water flowing through a screen door on a submarine.

A 12 point socket, or an impact gun . . . or worse, both at the same time, will tear the stainless cover off the original capped lug nuts. If a tightly fitted six point socket and a manual wrench are used, they will last for years. Replacements come in chrome plated steel or stainless steel. A caution with the stainless steel version . . . stainless is never as strong as carbon steel and stainless lug nuts are prone to stripping threads if ever over torqued. Chrome plated steel is a good choice.

Stainless has a propensity for galling....which means breaking your wheel studs to get them off.

As an alternate I got these after looking at reviews and what others have gotten.. They appear to be well made and stand up to impact gun use.

I've used the McGard lug nuts on 2 trailers now. Kind of pricey but a first class product.
