  • Goosebox 20k vs 16k

We are looking to purchase a Grand Design 303RLS in the next year or so. My preference is to use a Reese Goose Box. I have located a used (2022) 20,000/4,000 hitch. The 303 has an advertised pin weight of 1,882 which means the smaller Goose Box (16,000/3,200) would actually work. Is there a reason the 20,000lb could not be used in my proposed application or is there a downside to using the larger Goose Box? BTW, my tow vehicle is a 2022 F350.

    THANKS!

4shaw5 I run the larger on mine. I checked with Reese at the time I bought mine and they said no issue going over just do not go under. As I understand it there is an extra gusset welded onto the larger one to handle the extra weight. I was assured ride was not affected.

ncitro So you can confirm the ride with the 20,000 Goose Box is absolutely fine? I also spoke with a tech at Reese and he told me basically the same. I still wanted to hear from real world applications, not just a tech that may not have actually towed.

Before buying my Gen-Y I was looking at the Reese for my 303 and I found the 16k would be perfectly fine, even loaded up. My last weigh in at cat scales had 2500 pin weight and that was loaded up for a longer trip and admittedly some poor planning on weight distribution (I know now we probably should have moved a few things back further but we were within specs and it worked out fine). 16k Reese would handle this with ease. I believe the 20k was the same price as the 16k when I was looking though, so I probably would have gone 20k given the choice.

FYI I only made the decision to go Gen-Y over Reese because the Reese was going to be special order and take several weeks to get due to stock/inventory at the time and my rig was ready, so I needed something readily available and I was able to get a Gen-Y sooner. That said, I'm VERY happy with the Gen-Y and not at all disappointed; both are great products and I love my gooseneck conversion. If you end up looking into and going Gen-Y then its important to NOT go over specs on their gooseneck because of how the torsion mechanism works unless you want a very stiff ride. This isn't an issue with the Reese since you have some control via the airbag system.

No, my ride is great, no complaints.

Good morning. I just wanted to clarify those GDRV numbers for you. That advertised pin weight is for an EMPTY fifth wheel. It would be very easy to start approaching the 3,200 pound capacity of the smaller hitch you mention.

Rob Cate&Rob has been a 303 owner since 2015, and he can probably provide you with real world pin weights for his rig.

TucsonJim is correct, that 1882 +/- lbs is what is known as the UVW (unloaded vehicle weight) of the trailer as it leaves the factory. Empty propane tanks, no battery and nothing else in the trailer. The 303 does not have the big forward closet of the larger 5th wheels, but most of the storage space is still forward of the axles. Figure on a 2300 lb pin weight with empty tanks. More than this if the grey and black tanks have contents. The fresh water tank is over the trailer axles and will not affect pin weight.

Before you decide on a fixed position hitch (such as the goose neck ones being discussed) consider what brand of tow vehicle you are planning. The distance from the ball position to the open tailgate is 8" more on a Ford than on a GM. (I don't know about Ram). This makes hitching/unhitching complicated on the Ford . . . unless you have a manual slider hitch. See the attachment to post 18 of this thread for actual dimensions. https://gdrvowners.com/towing-and-hi...age2#post92358
