  • 310 Solitude, Short bed Ford and Andersen Ultimate

I am very close to my payload weight and have thought about changing out the B&W for an Andersen. This would save me close to 150 pounds. I am skeptical about the Andersen, as most I see in use are pulling 8' wide trailers with short boxes, the extra 6" is lot when backing in a tight spot. And the real kicker is once it is installed you live with the turning radius, no sliding it back. We pull about 7,000 miles per year and spend 5 months in the trailer, so it will see use.
My question is to those who have or have had a wide body FW pulled by a short box and using an Andersen hitch, any problems backing or turning and which way was the red receiver pointed ( front or back)? Would you recommend the hitch? Before it is mentioned, I am not going to get a dually. I am not concerned about the aluminum having enough strength.
    Thanks
    Carl

Yuma310 Welcome to the forum! I cannot help with the wide body part, but did pull my Reflection with an Andersen and a 6-3/4 foot bed Ford. I tried the red coupler in both direction and found with it pointed back (camper further from the truck) I had contact between the bed rails and the bottom of the pin box. Due to this I had to run it pointed forward (closer to the truck). I had plenty of turning radius here, but as you noted this could be an issue with the wider Solitude. It was a while ago, but my rails for my tonneau may have been part of the issue too. I later moved to a long bed, and ran the Andersen for a bit before moving to the Goosebox so that I would have an empty bed when unhooked. I think this issue may be specific to Ford as they have more bed between the rear axle and tailgate than GM and Dodge, so this may or may not be as much of an issue for you.

Carl, I might be a bit biased as I own a Pullrite slider, but their super light hitch looks to be a bit beefier. https://pullrite.com/products/superlite The connection is a bit different from the others and you still get a bit of offset.

I emailed Pullrite to check on turning radius and clerance. Also, mounting options, I will keep you posted. Who knows I may even post pics when I get whichever one wins the search.

          HI Yuma,

Per my post on the other site, I changed to the Curt Crosswing as it does not void the Lippert frame warrantly, give me 8.4" of additional turning space vs Andersen's 4" and it only weighs about 70lbs. It was heavy but was easier to put into the truck than the head on my companion from B&W which is supposed to weight about 70lbs also. Also nearly forgot that with the Crosswing I don't have to make a change to my Morryde pin box like you do with the Andersen.
