  • Weight distribution bar box

This seems like such a simple thing, but last year I didn't have it. This year I did: and I realized what a big deal it is, despite the simplicity. So maybe the idea will help others too.

After measuring the greasy WD bars carefully I built a simple box out of plywood and drilled round holes where I wanted the bars to rest. Then I cut through the box to turn the holes into semicircles. Then I routered the edges to avoid splinters, but a good sanding would work too.

This lives in my front storage compartment together with 25 other things, and I no longer need to worry about getting those things (and anything they touch) greasy!

Nice little box. Any plans to add a lid and a couple of screen door latches so the bars stay inside and other things stay out of the grease?

Nicely done! I did something similar for my WDH bars, but certainly not this fancy. I don't have any pictures (and that might be a good thing, since again mine is much more simplistic), but I used a scrap piece of 4x4. I then screwed three smaller pieces of 1x2 to that, one between the bar heads, and then two on the outsides. I have been trying to think of how to add to it, or build new, for the hitch head to keep it off the ground. Might need more scrap lumber

StephenO quick internet search for WDH portable storage came up with https://ezstorhitch.com/ I guess you could clamp a receiver to the frame and just shove it in.

https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/pr...eceiver)-49060 plus some flat bar and all thread. or if you are froggy have it welded.

I guess at that point, you could buy some EMT conduit of that fits around the bars and clamp that to the bottom of the framing also. not cheap, but easy to work with https://www.homedepot.com/p/2-in-x-1...1592/100400411 unless you know someone who knows someone that has a couple of short pieces laying around waiting for the dumpster.

This forum is way too good at spending each other's money. It's not as much fun being on this side of the money spending suggestions though, and it's much more fun reading the suggestions given to Yoda on what to buy!

StephenO Yes, it's more fun to be on the suggestion end of Yoda spending money than having to fork it over oneself. At least it's a one time expense. One stick of EMT and any cheap receiver (since it's not load bearing). If you have a local steel supply, you could go peruse their drop bin where everything is 50% off or so. Might get lucky and find the pieces you need in scrap. Bar holders could be plastic now that I think about it.

https://www.homedepot.com/p/2-in-x-1...A12H/202352536 still pricey vs https://www.homedepot.com/p/Charlott...0600/100348475 I'm speculating on the size pipe needed.

Good use for a reducer sleeve as they are a bit cheaper: https://www.amazon.com/Buyers-Produc...%2C109&sr=8-34 al in about a $50 project to keep that stuff out of the
              bay.

Even Better most of the hardware is already here: https://www.amazon.com/ECOTRIC-Adapt...%2C109&sr=8-38

I could have used the top of the box that I cut off to get the semicicrle holes, but I didn't think of it. I wish I had, it would have been a nice bonus.

Am I the only one to grease the WD bars and ball?

I didn't initially, and found that everything rusted. I would have ignored it except there are two flimsy pins holding the WD bars and those get stuck when rusty. I felt they were going to break off.

I was glad I started adding grease, it's also more quiet now. Maybe a lot more quiet, it's hard to compare with a long past memory.
