  • Reese Goosebox - terrible support when in need

Today as I was pulling out of a fuel stop 900 miles from home, the new style blue Goosebox manifold sent to replace my leaking original blew apart. This 20K Goosebox has been a problem since the RV dealer installed it on delivery of our 2022 Grand Design Solitude 310GK. And I thought it solved our problem as it held air for 3 days. We both heard a pop and rapid decompression behind us. Luckily only 2 miles from where we were staying for the night but a very rough and slow ride. 3 hours on the phone trying to get to Horizon tech support. 7 different times I had to call back after being disconnected as my wait time go closer to 0 only to be put back at 50 minutes when I re-dialed. I tried the customer support folks but all they would do is connect you to the tech support line without letting you finish a sentence. When you pressed 0 to leave a voicemail and callback number, disconnected. Reese web site was down. I am 900 miles from home starting an 8,000 mile trip into the Rockies with a hitch I no longer trust and in disrepair with no idea where to go to get support and a Horizon Global support line that is unreachable except for the clueless Customer Service reps. Absolutely pathetic customer support. I am so glad I brought the original leaky manifold with me!

This may sound like a dumb question, but where is the old manifold leaking. Is is a valve or seal? You can get replacement valve cores at any tire store. If it is a seam or seal, you can try the green slime used in bicycle tires in a pinch. Should not hurt the rubber, I would fill the bag and roll it around to coat everything before the install - call it a bush fix to get going.
Just a thought - trying to help

There is a little ball bearing on the side of the manifold box that is leaking - very slowly. Sprayed with soap and bubbles started to show up. It looks like a milled seal - there is no gasket just ball bearing against milled metal and the manifold can't be taken apart. It has been a problem and Reese redesigned it. The new one is completely different design and blew apart - can't be put back together.

I would bet a dab of green slim in and around that ball bearing would fix that if it can be massaged in some way. , In my off roading days we also used candle wax to repair leaking valve cores (before green slime came out)

Worth a shot except I don't know what is inside. There is a pressure schrader valve that you have to push in if you want to add any air. How that might be connected to the ball bearing, I'm not sure. I don't want that to 'gum' up the works so to speak.

Understood - there might be a better product that wont gum up the works. You could always use some dish soap to clean it and see what happens. Could just be some specks of dirt. That should not hurt anything

I'm not a whole lot of help here, I've never had any trouble like that with mine, and I've never had to contact Reese for anything. I have heard from others their support is terrible though. I know the block with the check valve you're talking about, I actually cut my air line and extended my block to the side of my trailer so it's easier to get to, but I still have the original check valve assembly. I'd think it should be an easy part to replace if they can get you one.

Failing that if you're starting over I have a friend with the Gen Y, he raves about it. Rubber torsion spring rather than an air bag to deal with.

I can’t offer any help with the specifics of the Goosebox . . . but I have tried to deal with Reese on issues with their 5th wheel hitch. Never got any response to email or phone calls. After the hitch broke once, I couldn’t stop thinking about that weak point in their design and decided to lower my stress level by going to a different manufacturer’s hitch. Cost me over $2K but well worth it to remove the “weak link”.

ajg617 I did find this email address for support at Reese that someone claimed got a response from. Give this a try:

Not seeing the manifold, I am going to guess that the check ball is actually used as a plug for a hole in their MFG process. Since the block is bad anyway, I'd pop the ball out and put in eight a pipe plug or a zerk fitting filled with red thread locker. (why thread locker, to seal any leaks in the zerk). If you don't like the thread locker on the zerk, pump grease in it before you install it to seal any leaks (grease can hold 15,000 psi if the gap is small enough).

Can you post a pic of the part that you are having issues with? This may help us to figure out how to get you up and running.
