  • Odd question, maybe?

    Here's the situation. I have a 2023 395MS and don't have a tow vehicle (TV) yet (I had it delivered to our RV lot). When I do purchase the TV, I want to make sure that I get the proper hitch. I would like to get the Reese Goose Box but the highest rated one that I've seen is 20K with a 4000 lb. pin weight. My dilemma is the "Ship Weight" as indicated on MyGDRV for my VIN is 21000 lbs which would give a pin weight of 4620 lbs (22% of 21000). The GVWR as indicated on the "Vehicle Weight Information Sheet (Momentum)" for my VIN is 20000 lbs and a Hitch Weight of 3224. So, I guess my question is should I size my hitch capacity to the "Ship Weight" or the GVWR? Any hitch I go with will be expensive, so I want to make the correct purchase. Thanks for any and all input you folks can provide.

    I find it very odd that GDRV would specify a GVWR of 20,000# and a ship weight of 21,000#. There must be an error. Typically, the ship weight for a 395M would be around 16,000 pounds. To find the real ship weight, check out the placards on the driver's side of your rig. Look for the UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight) number. This is the actual measured weight of your individual rig as it leaves the factory.

      I would recommend using GVRW for the hitch purchase.

        Get a hitch rated at or preferably over GVWR. I only say over because I'm the kind of guy that doesn't want to "just" have enough truck, or hitch, or whatever.

        Also what Jim pointed out. Something is up with your tags..uvw higher than gvw?

          If your numbers are correct, I think you need a 450 or 650 size truck and hitch.

            Actually, from some Ford owners I'm acquainted with, F450 model doesn't really add to the truck payload capacity over an F350. Some say a properly optioned F350 can out carry any F450..not a Ford guy so don't know if they are full of it or not...

            To the OP, I don't know how 'payload' literate you are, but don't go by a salesman's "oh, that's lots of truck" assertions. Look at the payload sticker on the door frame. It's the bible for THAT truck. And remember that payload means everything in the truck except gas. Includes you, passenger(s), tools, generator, etc, and the pin weight of the trailer. The sheet that comes with your trailer will have the pin weight on it for an empty trailer to help in your TV search.

              Thanks everyone for the input. Regarding the UVW the tag has that listed at 16500 lbs. so then that would be the correct "dry" ship weight. With this understanding then that gives me ~3500 lbs to work with and as long as I stay under the GVWR then I should be good to go with the Reese Goose Box.

              Regarding the truck recommendations I am leaning towards the F450 but a 350/3500 are not out of the question.

                In reference to my previous post, you can easily load up on the F450 options that negatively affect payload. I hear the F450 turning radius is what draws everybody in.

                  I have a few reservations about stepping up into the 4XX(X) class trucks dealing with the suspension being a lot stiffer on them. Also you will need to check with your insurance company and local registration rules. When you step up to the F450 the registration rules change even for non commercial use if I am remembering things correctly, but this depends on where you live.

                  Funny but the 4WD F350 turns better than it's 2WD cousin.
