  • Anyone running the Gen Y pinbox?

I have a Reflection 311BHS pulled by a short bed Chevy and am looking into purchasing a Gen Y. Currently have the Andersen, which I have no complaints about. However, after seeing some posts about failures, I'm leaning towards something a little more "built". According to Gen Y you just divide your GVWR by .22 and look at their chart to get the appropriately rated hitch. This leads me to a 4.5k version. Just curious if anyone out there with my camper has used the Gen Y. Also looking for input on the hitch in general if you have feedback with regards to compatibility to a short bed truck.

    Thanks for your help!

I know WondersAwait has one on a 303 and quite likes it. I run the Reese Goosebox and find it fine (had an Andersen previously) but would probably try the Gen Y next time to get away from the air bag and some other design issues that I have worked through. You should be aware that last I heard the Gen Y is not approved by Grand Design or Lippert, only the Goosebox was. That said you are running the Andersen now, so are probably aware of those concerns.

      Very happy with my GenY.

I used their recommended calculation for which spec to order, but prior to ordering I called their customer service line to verify I was looking at the correct one. The woman I spoke to was extremely knowledgeable and helpful, she confirmed I had the correct specs based on the weights I provided to her.

I have almost 15k miles on my set up. As for use it's extremely easy to operate hitching and unhitching, and having full access of my truck bed after spending 30 seconds removing the ball is exactly what I was after. The ride quality was a tad harsh for the first 500 miles or so as the torsion mechanism "broke in" but between 500 and 1000 it smoothed out considerably. I've heard it can take up to 1500 miles but mine was well under 1k and I noticed it get better. I've towed it up and down mountain passes as well as long flat stretches and no problems to speak of. I checked torsion hinge torque every 100 miles for the first 1k miles, then after that I check every 1k but that's probably way overkill.

Also, aesthetically I love how the chains feed through the hitch body. It just looks slick. I grabbed a couple clips to allow me clip the chains up to themselves when it's not connected to the truck and it keeps them out of the way and looks nice.

This morning I remembered and wanted to add the note that Gen Y recommends a different weight spec on the torsion based on a different formula for a toy hauler versus a standard 5th wheel camper. I see the OP has a Reflection but for anyone coming across this thread looking for one for a Momentum or other hauler, make sure you're using the correct calculation; they add and account for estimated weight you put in the back of your hauler and how it impacts pin weight and the momentum (pun intended) of the movement on and off the hitch.

Awesome! Thanks for the response and pictures. I am definitely leaning in this direction. I did read some posts about custom ordering the 3" longer version. I talked to Gen Y and they made it seem like I would be fine with the standard. So, I guess I'll save the 300 bucks and worst case I have to run an offset ball.

WondersAwait: Do you haul stuff in the bed of your truck when you camp? I'm slightly worried about pinning a piece of firewood or a kids bike/toy between the hitch and the bed. Is this not an issue or do you do something to keep things away from the pivot?

          Thanks!

I do use a little bit of my bed when hooked up. I use a ratchet strap and strap the stuff to the front of the bed. I keep the back end clear. I easily carry a generator, 1-2x 20lb propane tanks, a pancake air compressor, and a Rubbermaid of tools all in a row lined up against the cab. Strap that all forward, plenty of room for the hitch and no risk of pinning something.

Edit: after re-reading the original post, I will note I have a standard 6'7" bed and not the short 5'10" bed. I am not sure how much difference it makes with clearances and space with standard vs shorty.

WondersAwait - Great pics. What brand and model of tonneau cover are you using, I'm looking for a roll up for my Ford.

TucsonJim it's a TruXedo Sentry CT. It wasn't cheap but I love it. I've had it for 2 years and it still looks great even though I don't baby my truck; it sits outside year round and I use my truck. The one thing I don't like about it is that you need to close the tailgate first and then lock down the end of the tonneau after. If you close the cover first then tailgate it'll smash the weatherstripping. It's fine when you're used to it but if anyone else goes to close my tailgate I have to keep an eye on it so they don't ruin that seal. Speaking of seal, like all covers it's not weatherproof, water gets in the edges but it keeps most of the bed dry enough that I don't worry about my stuff in there being exposed to the weather. The hard flip covers give a little more protection and the solid surface is nice but I like opening my bed 98% of the way and still seeing out my back window. No cover is perfect. I would absolutely buy it again if I needed to get another cover right now.
