  • Ball Mount Receiver Hitch Lock...Gone! (Near Miss)

Started to remove the Blue Ox ball mount from my truck (we're in OKC doing some site-seeing so didn't want it protruding behind the bumper) when I found, much to my shock, the lock at the end (1) of the receiver hitch pin completely missing! It was only due to the way the ball mount was clamped down by the anti-rattle device / ball mount tightener (2) that kept the pin from falling out and the entire ball mount separating from the truck.

The scary part is I normally attach the emergency brake cable to the anti-rattle device. The safety chains would have kept the trailer attached to the truck, but the emergency brakes on the trailer would never have engaged. That's obviously a mistake--it should be connected to the truck.

Lesson learned. Thankfully NOT the hard way.

P.S. No idea how or why the lock departed the pin. Either I didn't secure it completely (not sure if the key will come out of the lock unless it's secured?) or the mechanism failed. Either way...not good.

Wow! How far had you towed since you last locked it?

Hitch locks etc. are frustrating for me. They are never secure, and their limited security is further compromised by using cheap materials. I kind of think they help keep things from coming open on the road, but your experience disproves that.

I have a Master lock on the tongue of my boat trailer. ANY Brinks padlock key will open it just as well as the key that came with it.

How does that lock attach to the pin? . Does it screw into the center hole of the pin? From the photo it looks like something is way back in that hole. Maybe a new one with a safety clip is in order https://www.bulletproofhitches.com/p...ccc0ec&gad id=690968429240&gad_source=1

I have one of those hitch pins on my truck. I have found that you have to be "positive" on making sure that the threads actually engage each other when screwing it on. Very easy to think that you are, and actually not, or only get one or two threads in. I always make sure that the lock end is fully seated by seeing how far it is in on the pin and I can not turn the key anymore. Since I have the fifth wheel, I only have the hitch with a 2" ball on for rear end deterrence, and occasional small trailer stuff.

If I recall right, yes you can take the key out at any time.

Since leaving home, about 1,200 miles! Says something about the tension on the ball mount (and pin) from the anti-rattle device. To your point about a lock vs just a pin, a supervisor once told me locks keep honest people honest. If a thief truly wants my stuff, there's little I can do (outside of hiring full-time security or bringing along a trained German Shepherd) that will stop them.

Wileykid -- likely scenario you describe. I've replaced the lock pin with a different style.

Wow. You used up a lot of your allocated good luck for 2024. Glad your trailer didn't pass you on the hwy.

Same... my OCD requires me to buy a new (standard) hitch pin every spring as part of routine maintenance.

howson Howard, glad happenstance caused you to look at the pin when you did and not later under different circumstance.

I bought a locking pin, but was disappointed when I started looking at it. Looked too sleazy to trust. I just stuck with the standard pin with a hairpin clip.
