  • Pinbox bolt quantity?

My used camper came with a Reese Goosebox. I swapped that out and put the original pinbox back in. Not knowing where to mount the pinbox for ride height, I centered it and loaded up the holes with as many bolts as would fit. Now I want to level the camper and need to drop the pin box in order to raise the front of the camper. This would require omitting two bolts, leaving me with 8 total bolts holding the pinbox to the camper. Is 8 enough?

I contacted GD who sent me to Lippert. (common story) Lippert could not answer my question either. They sent me the drawing (attached) and It shows 10 bolts, seen at the right of the drawing. You can see how if the pinbox was lowered the bottom, two bolts will have no where to go. The drawing also gives a measurement in reference to "One Hole Up". To me this would indicate that you could use the lower set of 8 holes to achieve the proper ride height.

What do you all think about this situation?

Their isometric, far right view, shows only six bolts.

My pin box uses 5 bolts. 3 forward, 2 aft.

I am taking into account both sides. I only see 5 bolts in the far right drawing which would indicate 10 bolts total.

By that total count, my pin box has 10 bolts.

I do not see anything in the documents that I have access to, nothing labels the bolts on the pin box. Lippert does supply the frame with the pin box installed to GD. I think the only change that GD would make would be if someone upgraded to a Morryde pin box.

I would feel safe with 5 bolts on each side. With the holes provided and the adjustment allowed this would be the case for missing 1 hole. I think issues would arise if you were down to 3 on each side.

I looked for a video that might show how many are there from the factory but could not find one.

I believe the pin box bolts are 5/8" and the torque is 160#, just some extra info.

Did you mean to say you would be comfortable with 4 per side? I definitely would not go down to 3 per side.

It looks like the number of bolts depends on the pin box weight rating. Under 16k use 8 bolts, over 16k uses 10 bolts.

If that is true then I would need 10 bolts. Where did you see that?

                    TucsonJim Thanks for the picture.

It looks like I may have to get creative if I want to raise the front my Momentum. It sat perfectly level with my Chevy, but is a little nose-down with the Freightliner. You really have to look to see it and most people won't notice, but I do.
