  • 303 and a full tank of water....

    Hi All
I intend to get off the beaten trail this coming weekend where I need (want) to bring a full tank of water if possible. I also tow a boat behind the trailer. On my previous trailer the fresh water was centered over the axles. It would appear from the drain location that the 303's fresh tank is behind the axles. Have any of you 303 owners towed with a full fresh tank, and how was towing stability?
I plan on stowing all water and beer and heavy stuff as far forward as possible (not bringing 40 gals of beer..lol) , but not sure how far behind the axle the fresh tank is so I'm not sure how much of an effect on pin weight it will have.
    Suggestions? Advice?

I think Rob Cate&Rob and others have confirmed over the years that the fresh tank on our 303s and many other GDRVs is positioned pretty much over the axles. While I have not towed behind ours with a full fresh tank, we have traveled to local state parks with a full fresh tank a number of times. I noticed very little handling/pin weight difference if any.

Hopefully Rob or someone else will chime in to confirm and share more information.

I just checked the 303 drawing. The fresh tank is centered almost exactly over the rear axle hanger. It should have no bearing on towability in my opinion.

Thanks, Jim.....appreciate you taking time to chime in. Seems Rob actually has pictures of his tank location and maybe can share at some point. Well thinking about it, what doesn't Rob have pictures of when it comes to the 303, his boat, and pretty much anything we need to know/learn about !

          Hi Dan,

Oddly enough . . . the fresh water tank in our 303 is about the one thing that I don't have pictures of . I have dropped the coroplast from the front back the front axle and from the rear forward to the rear axle . . . but have not dropped the coroplast above the axles where the water tank is.

I have never towed with more than a few gallons in the fresh water tank . . . those of us with "smaller" trucks have to carefully consider the weight of everything in the trailer or in the truck!

Say what ! - Scott'n'Wendy and I were waiting to see pictures......maybe even a video. Well, it's probably my turn to do so if I ever need to do so.

Yes, that smaller truck is a sleeper of which only a few folks know how capable it really is !

Thanks, for chiming in as always, Rob !

Scott - FWIW, we recently returned from our first trip with our rig. We had full fresh tank (+ empty or near empty greys and black) on the way out. Unit towed just fine w/the F350 diesel - including some mountain roads. Anecdotally, on the way back (all 4 tanks empty), it seemed to have a bit more "bounce" which I am attributing to less weight over the trailer axles. Again - not scientific, and being first trip, not a lot to compare to (I could be imagining things) - but no issues at all!

As an aside - we (2 of us) made it 5 nights without a lot of strenuous "water management". Only challenge was the kitchen grey was filling up a bit fast - that large, rectangular sink holds a lot of water!!! (We started just capturing the dish rinse water and dumping in the black tank). We were very pleased (and actually a bit surprised) that we didn't run out of fresh water or tank capacities.

              Good luck on your trip!

Thanks for the replies. You guys are AWESOME! When I saw where the drain was I was afraid the tank was a ways behind the axles. Glad to hear it's not!!
And ya, Cate&Rob , I was expecting pics or at least a pdf with measurements...lol

TucsonJim Where do you access these drawings you speak of? I'm an electrician - I'd love me some drawings/schematics. Do you have access to that kind of info because you are a mod, or am I overlooking reference material somewhere on the site?

The four moderators have a set of basic drawings for most units. But GDRV will not let us share them because they are considered proprietary and they want to control who gets copies. But sometimes they will send copies to owners if you call the customer service line at 574-825-9679. Just be advised these are very rudimentary drawings and not what I'd call a "schematic".

if the center of the fresh tank is over the rear axle, it should take a small amount off of the KP. Ideal would be in the center of the fresh tank were over the equalizer between the axles that would put all of the weight into the axles and not add or take weight off the KP.

I'm glad to report that the 303 with a full tank of water and a 16.5' bowrider w/90hp on the trailer's trailer hitch, towed very well.

That is great news and quite a long set up , wish we could double tow here in Pa.

As long as it's under 23m (75'6") combined length you're ok here. I believe it is ok in Minnesota but if you can't in Pa I guess it's a state by state thing?
We live in western Ontario just north of Minnesota. We have thousands of accessible lakes with lake trout, bass, and walleye so being able to tow a boat is great.

We have to take 2 vehicles to my favorite walleye lake but it is only 1 1/2 hours away. I miss fishing in Ontario , we fished Bisco Lake north of Sudbury quite a few times in the 80's and 90's great place with good walleye fishing and pike. I have not been there for years. Might get back there someday.
