  • Tongue weight from cat scale

If I have my vehicle rear axle weight both hitched and unhitched to the trailer, is the difference the tongue weight? I measured 600 pounds using the bathroom scale method. When I did this on the CAT scale, the difference was 1,260 pounds.

Not entirely--the entire weight of the vehicle must be considered.

Can you post the weight tickets?

Also...please consider filling out your signature line. The Welcome Letter has all the details or just look for the applicable info in the Forum Use channel. (Thanks!)

        total 14,060 6,440 (7,620)
        Hitched Truck Weight: 2700 + 4740 = 7440
        Unhitched Truck Weight: 2960 + 3480 = 6440
Load added to the truck from Trailer Tongue Weight: 7440 - 6440 = 1000 lbs.

Explanation: Since the hitch is to the rear of the rear axle, any load placed on it will remove some weight from the front axle and add it to the rear axle. So... assuming that everything in the truck is the same in both the hitched and un-hitched cases, then the additional load is the trailer hitch weight. I hope this helps.

The fresh tank (in front of axles) was full, 43 G = 360 #, and the black and grey (behind axles) were empty. Would having the black and grey full, counter weight the weight the fresh puts on the tongue?

Yes. Weight added behind the trailer axles will reduce the weight on the tongue. The amount of reduction will be proportional to the respective distances.

AS RJAPCOK says, filling the tanks behind the axels will lighten the load on the tongue. It will also increase the load on the axels, so that needs to be considered as well as the effect on total cargo capacity.

If the fresh water tank is full in anticipation of boondocking, then there needs to be a plan in place for dumping of the black and grey tanks on arrival at the campsite. If there isn't a sewer hook up or dump station things could get nasty.
