Bigger fuel tanks eat into payload also - the stated (yellow sticker) payload is after full fuel. So, bigger tank - smaller payload. I shudder to think of how many grossly overloaded pickups we see on the road...

Will this truck pull either of these trailers? If so, will it be a struggle? Thanks
Many have already answered your question. From a towing standpoint your truck will pull either of those trailers without issue (Both are under the 18,500#). The GCVWR is about 750# over your trucks capacity, but I don't think that's your main issue. You're issue, as has been pointed out, is your payload. My guess is you'll bee at least 500# over your payload, but likely close to 800-1000# over.

In the end it's your decision. THe truck will pull either trailer anywhere you want....but it will be over the capacity of the truck.

I knew that GM had increased payload on their 3/4 ton trucks, but I did not know that they had gone that far! This is good news. Not too long ago, a 3/4 ton truck was limited to 10,000 lbs GVWR. (admittedly an artificial number driven by licensing requirements in some states). Thus, the truck would often weigh 8000 lbs . . . leaving only 2000 lbs for payload. Way less (on paper) than what the truck could actually carry. There are very few physical differences (some will say none) between a 2500 and a 3500.

Ford did the same with their 3/4 ton trucks. You can get he "high Capacity Towing Package" which increases GVWR to 10,800#. Because the Ford body is aluminum, it is lighter than both GM/CHevy and Ram (mine comes in just under 7700#) leaving more for payload (mine is a diesel 3/4 ton crew cab with 3166# payload). Essentially it's a 3/4 ton with a 1 ton rear end.

But, when towing 5th wheels, I would go to a 1 ton for sure. Only exception would be the "1/2 ton" 5th wheels where I would use a 3/4 ton truck.

We should be careful in stating that the 2500 and 3500 trucks are identical. While there may be a model that crosses over at the same capability, wheel and tire size, spring packs and how the vehicle is optioned just to name a few are used to determine the trucks capability.

The 2021 trailer towing guide will list many models from 10K to 11K and beyond so the ratings are based on the vehicles design and capability.

Use the door label as a guide and figure up to 20% - 25% GVWR of the trailer for payload and folks will not be disappointed. Up to 15% for travel trailers.

To add some additional info in hopes this helps folks.

On page 3 of the Chevrolet trailering guide in the previous post, GM has the following verbiage.

Silverado Series In general, a higher series number in a model indicates a greater load-carrying capacity. In addition, a truck with a higher series number typically has a stronger frame, a stiffer suspension and higher-capacity brakes, increasing the truck’s ability to trailer heavy loads.

Bob - I'm a little late to this discussion. I have a 2018 349M, with upgraded Moryde Ind Susp and disks. I was towing it with a 2018 Siverado 2500HD. As previously mentioned the issue was not the ability to tow, but the payload. On 5 trips on Cat Scales the ave pin weight was 3328, with a high of 3920 and a low of 2820. My truck alone, loaded with dogs. tools etc was 8900#. Based on your sticker (and my truck weight) you only have 2450# capacity available. I upgraed tires and put on bags to compensate. However still towing illegally. I ended up buying a GMC 3500 dually. Just wanted to give you some numbers

When I spec'd my truck the difference in price between a 2500 and a 3500 was something around $1000. I am glad I spent the few extra bucks and got it. The ride is still decent and it handles my trailer well even with the high pin weight. I have no trouble with my gen and my trailers spare in the back of the truck. Although I dont have a similar year 2500 here to compare it one to one I do know there are several major things that are bigger on the 3500 such as the overload leaf on the rear springs and the huge brakes. It also had an available heavier front spring (torsion bar) which I spec'd for a minimal amount of $.
When it comes to trucks I almost always order mine so that I get it with what I want and dont pay for things I wouldnt want.

It was built Dec 1 2020, when it got to the dealer on Dec 14th I immediately went to pick it up. Even though it was a sold order it still showed up in their inventory/ The first day it was there someone faxed an insurance certificate and their info just in case I didnt take it.
