  • Safely gassing up towing vehicle

Hello, I'm new to the list and so far there is a lot of good stuff here. I heard from someone who was told by a gas station attendant that they needed to turn something off on their trailer before pulling up to the gas pumps otherwise they could ignite the fumes and blow up the station.

So my question ... is there anything special we have to do to the trailer before pulling up to the gas pump? We have a 2021 Reflection 295RL.
    Thanks,
    Ron

If you have any propane appliance on, water heater, furnace, fridge, these items should be turned off. There is a spark associated with these items when they turn on to ignite the propane and this is what could cause an issue while fueling. Really anything causing a flame or spark should not be use around a fueling station.

While this is true...has an RV ever 'set off' a gas station?

It is important to understand that the safety measure means going inside the RV and turning off the fridge. Not just turning off the propane at the tank. I was filling up my gasoline truck and heard the fridge propane igniter snapping in the RV on the other side of the pump . I advised the owner . . . but, he replied that it was “OK” because he had turned off the propane at the tank . . . which, of course, was why the igniter was trying to relight the fridge.

If you are a fan of Mythbusters, you will know that it's had NOT IMPOSSIBLE to ignite fuel fumes at the pumps.

Pretty much any heat source is capable of igniting the fumes if the right air fuel combination is achieved. No I do not condone the stupidity of people. I have and will continue to leave my DIESEL running when fueling (has more to do with mixing of additives while pumping). Gas engines are a different story as the fuel volatility is completely different.

Cell phones and Cold weather static electricity are just as bad for fueling as a running engine or other heat source, however just about every time someone fills up they can look around and see the non stop sea of people using their phones. I do use my phone after the pump is started to log my fuel stop into the app. Not always am I sitting in the truck.

Also, static electricity is a very real risk when fuelling. Filling portable containers in the trunk of a car or bed of a truck and getting in/out of the vehicle during the fuelling process can create a static charge. Always fill portable containers positioned on the ground and once you start filling your vehicle stay at the pump.

How could a cell phone ignite fuel vapour?

When I use truck stops to fill up, I am in between 2 large trucks that keep the engine running the entire time they are filling up...but my wife still tells me to turn off the truck while fueling...So I listen to the boss

My wife also doesn't like me showering if there is a lightning storm in the area - it might get me. I've never heard of an incident of anybody getting struck by lightning through the water from a shower head.

I think you do what you feel is safe and responsible....or what your wife feels safe and responsible.

Scott'n'Wendy Cell phone ringers or vibrators can create sparks. Again any source of heat (spark like a spark plug) can cause ignition.

Well, up here north of the border, you can pay for your gas with your cell phone while standing beside the pump. Pretty common up here to see people gassing up while looking at their phone....which probably has more potential to cause a problem..lol
Apparently studies done in Texas support this?

Static charges from entering and exiting the vehicle and filling portable gasoline containers while still in the vehicle are the biggest hazards.
While fueling diesel you could literally stand with a torch in your hands and be safe.
