  • GenY installed on 150 Series/Replacing Turning Point

EDIT: PICS AND MEASUREMENTS IN POSTS 14 &15

So I figured I’d start a new thread detailing this experiment. I’ll post pics & measurements, answer any questions I can. As of today, I have everything I need for the install and have already removed the Turning Point. Couple of notes so far, 1) the Turning Point is heavier than expected. I’ll see if I can weigh both but the GenY doesn’t feel heavier……. 2) didn’t pay close enough attention and didn’t order new bolts, the Turing Point has welded capture nuts so I needed bolts, washers, ext (picked those up tonight).

couple of preliminary pics, not much too see, stay tuned.

Take note of where that metal screw holding the emergency brake box is when lining up the Gen Y. Mine had a different frame connection and looks a bit different, but we had a slight struggle with that screw being in the way. We ended up shearing it clean off and bolting that controller box back on later because it was blocking how the plates had to line up.

Excited to see how your install goes and to see more Gen Y's out there.

I think it was rivited not screwed, had to drill it out as I recall.

While you have easy access to that metal junction box replace it with a box similar to this Amazon.com: MICTUNING 7 Way Electrical Trailer Junction Box - 7 Gang Trailer Wire Connection Box Weatherproof for Rewiring Camper RV Caravans Boat Light 7 Way Trailer Wire Connectors : Automotive, it will help if you need to trouble shoot the wiring down the road, plus easier to do when pin box is out of the way.

On mine one side was screwed like can be seen on the picture in post 1, but the other side was riveted. On mine the screw came off super easy, but the rivet is what gave us trouble and we ended up drilling out, correct. In the picture posted it looks like this one is held by one screw.

I wouldn't worry about needing to change to a mictuning box before mounting the hitch. My Gen Y leaves a ton of area accessible and that junction box is easy to get to. Gr8fulcampers looks to also give that clearance I believe. You're not wrong that it's eaiser to do with even less in the way but it's not an urgent thing IMO.

Quick update, it’s hung, not secured. My boss came by this morning (yes, my boss is that cool and great to work for) to help lift it in place, super easy with 2 people. I’ll work on securing and torquing down this evening after work.

Got lucky on emergency brake box, it was attached on the frame/wing out of the way. GenY slid right into place, don’t even have to relocate it!

Gr8fulcamper! definitely curious on how this turns out, especially when it comes to bed rail/tailgate clearance. I have 22 Ram, and still researching hitches.

It appears you used the lower set of holes on the Gen-Y. Is it possible to use the upper set to give you more bed rail clearance if needed? Just wondering how much extra height might come from using the upper holes as that is the only adjustment available other than using an extended shank goose ball? Correct?

This is a great writ up - Thanks

                  Keith

ON edit - does the Gen-Y fit inside or outside of the Lippert king pin frame mount? I cant tell from the pictures, or I am not seeing this correctly. Probably need more coffee.

I am also curious to know the dimension from under the trailer nose to the bottom of the Gen-Y where it would sit on the goose ball I know in operation this will change as the suspension flexes. Hopefully this is about 26 to 28 inches to give you 6" of bed rail clearance (at compression) assuming your distance from top of bed rail to truck floor is 20" - 21". My hay trailer goose ball (std height) puts the base of the goose neck neck hitch 2" off my bed floor.

yes sir, you can use the top row for more clearance,I used the lower bolt holes to start, I have the weighsafe goose ball(yep, I’m that kinda of auto enthusiast nerd), it sits about 3.5” higher than a standard ball so took an edjumicated guess how it might sit. As it sits right now, have about 1,500 lbs on the pin, rig is decently loaded but not full by any means. I’ll have more time this evening to find level ground and get better measurements but the quick and dirty looks like I have at least 8” of bed rail clearance.

note on bolts………..I bought 1.5” bolts per instructions, should have grabbed 2” (which is what the GenY “kit” comes with). Tractor Supply didn’t have enough lock nuts so I grabbed lock washers instead. Everything is torqued to spec, don’t like the minuscule about of thread showing, also not sure if at 160 ft lbs if I smashed the lock washer to the point it’s not really going to work as designed. What I have will work for now, probably going to just order the set from GenY and change them out before our next trip. Anyway, quick pic hooked to the truck and moved a few feet just to feel her out.

oh ya, on my 150 series, and I assume any turning point application, the GenY fits inside the frame/wings.

If you are worried about it, pull the bolts one by one, put a single drop of blue loctite on the threads and reinstall. This of course is after you get it adjusted to where you want it. I suggest checking the bolts after the first 2-3 tows.

I do like having at least 1 bolt longer because it allows me to hang the emergency breakaway up out of the way. The 7 way and whip get rolled up and stuffed inside the pinbox.

Are you on a crest of a hill or is that the camera bowing things? Looks good. Would be good to know if you can drop the tailgate and what clearance you have for connecting at an angle. and can you open the front hatch on the trailer when hooked up? (I can't) Also what is the depth of your bed (floor to top of rail)? Just curious. Looks like it is going to work.

Is this the goose ball set up you have? https://www.weigh-safe.com/product/s...ooseneck-ball/ looks interesting.

                        Thanks

                          Keith,
Your eyes don’t deceive you, there is a slight rise there. I can easily drop the tailgate when straight or slightly off center, I’ll have to measure again to see how much of an angle I can be and still open it. I cannot open the front hatch all the way, it actually just touches the camera lens on the tailgate cam (go figure) but as you will see in the pic below I can get in there if needed. Bed depth is about 19.5” iirc, I’ll verify that tomorrow. I remember checking that measure for the bedrug and backflip, seeing if my rolling cooler would fit under the cover! I have that goose ball but specifically the B&W square version. For the initial setup it does work, I’ll post the pics and measure in the next post.

Alright folks, here’s the skinny on my initial set up, it works! I only have 1,400 lbs of pin weight, full load is somewhere around 1,800 lbs so I know the nose will drop a little. Current setup sits a smidge nose high.

Specs: truck is a 2021 Ram 2500 crewcab short bed (6’4”), using a Weighsafe Safe Load goose ball for the B&W Turnover (about 3.5” taller than a standard ball). My truck is all stock, right down the the wheels and tires. Almost forgot, BAK Revolver X4S bed cover with rails inside the bed rails.

bed rail clearance is 8” on the side, little over 7.5” on the tailgate. As for the pin box to inside bedrail clearance, at least 6” measured while the truck was cranked over whatever that angle is. Additionally, same angle, there’s about 5” of clearance between the back of the cap and front cap of the rig.
