  • What would you do? - Multiple issues

We need some direction on what to do for our 2021 261BH Transcend travel trailer. We are new RV owners who purchased it in early 2021 after years of research. We took it on several trips in 2021 and enjoyed it immensely but 2022 has been a different experience for us. In March 2022 we contacted our dealer to schedule the annual roof inspection as we were told that the roof needed to be inspected annually to maintain the warranty. We were specifically told that it had to be a dealer and could not be a certified mobile mechanic. They told us that there were no available appointments for us to have the roof inspected until June which was after we needed to use the trailer after we sold our house until our new one was finished. Leaving the trailer for over a month was not an option. It was at this point that we were told that the inspection could be done anytime in the calendar year and that we could do it at the end of the season which we decided to do.

We've been calling multiple dealers since September and just cannot find one that is convenient for us to have the roof inspected. They are all booked up. We could make an appointment in 2023 but from what we were told, that will violate our warranty. With less than a month left in the calendar year, we're running out of time.

Worse, we've started experiencing system failures in our trailer the past month. We've had several water leaks due to loosened threaded fittings that do not have Teflon tape on them causing them to loosen and leak. More, our furnace shut down on us and will not restart. We've replaced fuses but still have a red light in the converter box leading me to believe that something is wrong with it and the furnace is not getting any power. I'd have to remove the whole furnace from the outside to verify that as there is no access from the inside. Additionally, all GFCI outlets in the trailer have stopped working. The main GFCI outlet still works but none of the other GFCI outlets are getting power further leading me to believe that there is a power issue in the trailer. To top it all off, we've seen water droplets dripping from the speakers in the ceiling making me believe that there is a leak in the roof of our 1 year old trailer.

We are looking for advice on how we should proceed and what we should do. We have an appointment for March to have this looked at but would like do what is best for longevity of its life.

    Hi Dave,

Welcome to the world of RV ownership. Not that this is any kind of a valid “excuse” . . . but, most owners can fully understand your predicament. My advice is that you should contact Grand Design Customer Service and get a case on file with them including all the information in your post. Most dealers throw up every kind of excuse as you have experienced. Ask around the park where you are and get a recommended mobile RV tech up on your roof to assess and repair as required. Even if you have to pay out-of-pocket, this is money well spent. WRT the furnace issues, ask GDCS if they will authorize a mobile tech to look into this because your dealer won’t look at this until March.

Many of us on this owners-helping-owners forum take on these problems ourselves. If you are inclined to do this, just ask away . . . we are here to help.

WRT the plumbing leaks . . . Teflon tape is not the answer. These fittings seal on replaceable cone washers inside the fitting.

MapleKing after just 8 months our hot water heater stopped working. I thought it was a bad circuit board and procrastinated taking it to dealer. One day I was doing some plumbing work around the water heater and notices a wire that was just hanging out. I looked around and found that it had come loose from a wago connector. I reconnected it and suddenly the water heater worked.

Sometimes an issue is something super simple like a wire coming loose from a connector, sometimes it is a complicated issue.

Rob gave some great advice. Call GD customer service and report the situation.

Also, I would get up on the roof and do a self-inspection. Take pictures of anything you are worried about, take notes for your records. If you feel up to it, start tracing the issue with the furnace. It might be something simple.

      Good luck. Enjoy your travels.

Actually, you can do your own roof inspection and maintenance and not void the warranty. If you are physically capable of getting on the roof, you can photograph the inspection and any needed maintenance. Make sure you turn on the date stamp on the photos for evidence of when the roof was inspected. Normal maintenance is typically washing your roof and resealing any areas where the sealant may be loose or cracked. I do mine four times per year. I photograph the condition of the roof during the inspection, and photograph it again after the cleaning and maintenance.

        A couple of caveats.
        1. Make sure you read the warranty documentation in detail to make sure you're in compliance with self inspection and maintenance in order to maintain the warranty.
        2. Be extremely careful on the roof. We now of owners who have fallen from the roof and been seriously injured from the fall. Make sure you keep items like scrub brushes, hoses, and buckets in plain sight so you don't trip over them. Always step forward, and never backward on the roof.

MapleKing -- at the risk of "piling on", do not delay inspecting your roof. If not able (or willing) to do it yourself, ask the campground for a recommendation / suggestion for a local mobile technician. It will cost out-of-pocket, but regular roof inspections are an absolute "must do".

Just a caveat that if he's taking about a dealer extended warranty then a lot of those require annual inspection by the selling dealer.

I believe the factory warranty requires quarterly roof inspections not annual, but like Jim suggested you can do those yourself as long as you document them.

I am an electrician. Most owners do not understand how GFCIs work. PM me if this is still an issue and you’d like some help.

Didn't notice this post before I guess. I'll take a stab at the furnace issue. First off...Does your stove light? Did you just refill the LP tank? If the furnace tried to start when you were low/out of LP and failed three times it would be locked out. Switch your furnace thermostat to "OFF", then back to heat to reset the lockout. Also check to ensure your 12v battery is in a good state of charge. ie over 12v
