  • Studded Snow Tires for my 2022 F350

I am putting this here so I hope it is OK

YES Studded - and you cant talk me out of it.

As I am headed to Mississippi over Christmas and fully know how bad the weather can get between here and there, especially north Texas, NM and Ice storms south. I need something with better traction than the stock Michelin LTX A/T 2 that came on it from the factory. They are a bit worn too. The size I need is 275/65/20 although the spare is a Goodyear 275/70/18 Yep from the factory.

This is the snow tire I want, but it is out of stock everywhere https://www.discounttire.com/buy-tir...ta-lt3-studded I have run theses for years on all my vehicles and they are the best of the best when it comes to snow tires.

But alas I can't get them, so the only choices left are Cooper and General

Then there are two other choices https://www.discounttire.com/buy-tir...e#read-reviews and https://www.discounttire.com/buy-tir...e#read-reviews

Years ago (late 60's I was a tire buster and the shop sold only General - were not that good, but I have never run them. I have run Cooper on an old Bronco and the were OK

Does anyone here have any first hand information on the Cooper or General? This trip will be solo without the trailer, but in the past I have taken the trailer with me when we had the kids. Both are priced about the same and reviews are all over the place.

    Thanks for any help
    Keith

I had the original, worn, Goodyears replaced with Coopers at Four States tire. So far so good. I like the effective side lugs on the Coopers.

Jlawles2 has seriously good GoogleFi skills.

I use General Altimax studded tires on my Dodge 3500. Studded tires on a 4x4 is the best. You can go just about anywhere. But if you do get stuck...nobody can come get you..lol

Got lucky. Started clicking links in the google search until something did not say out of stock. NOW that does not mean that they are in stock at the locations listed. I've learned that the hard way several times.

Yoda I'm sure you've checked the laws in the states you plan to drive through with studded tires. I do not think Mississippi or Texas allows them.

I know MN allows us to visit with studded tires, but are they allowed for residents during the winter?

Nope, just for visitors from states which allow them. Yoda I've found conflicting info on some states like TX and MS - I'll let you who can have studs figure it out! BTW, I had studs on a car decades ago when I lived in CO. Great on ice, but not as good on pavement as non-studded tires.

I have never had an issue with crossing states that do not allow studs. I think it depends on the registration plate. But my and SWMBO safety comes first. I have had passers by ask about the noise and I explain the studs and they mention the have never heard of them ( truck stop in Munroe)

Alex - Yep you are correct. Dry pavement performance can decrease with studs. However I have never found it an issue. Rain has not been a problem, probably due to the open channels and sniping on the tries, Appreciate your thoughts though.

Jlawles2 Joseph - neither of the sites or sellers has solid reviews. tires-easy.com is questionable. I am probably going with the Coopers. Ill call my Discount tire guru and ask him to check these sources as maybe Nokia has thier new US warehouse up and running now.

I am not comfortable buying tires online with out backup support. Discount Tire has always been good to me here in Durango, including covering my Alaska GY endurance failure,

Everyone has preferences when it comes to tires, for what it's worth the Cooper tires served me well in Alaska when I plowed snow commercially.
Currently am running Michelins on my truck and have had to go over some passes and the occasional snow around home without any issues.
Did purchase a set of tires with walnuts in them for a company pickup over in MT a couple of years ago and got good feedback from the person driving it.

On another note, got some good feedback from a co-worker a year or so back about the socks vs chains - he tows bigger trailers with race cars and said they're easier to install, get good traction, and, unlike chains or cables, won't tear up a trailer. Got them "just in case", but haven't used them so no firsthand experience.
