  • Using leveling bricks?

I bought a set of 10 leveling bricks to use on my travel trailer when the terrain was not even laterally. My fifth wheel has an auto-leveling system, so I no longer need the bricks for that. Is there any other reason that I may want hold on to them?

    Hi Dan,

You may want to hold on to those. Your leveling system will handle the job just fine if the RV is on pretty level ground to start with. But if you try to set up where the ground is off level quite a bit, the leveling system can actually raise the tires on one side off the ground. This is not recommended. By pulling onto those leveling bricks before auto leveling, you'll be able to get the RV level without raising the tires too high.

I agree with the above and I also still use them under my leveling jacks when the terrain is uneven.

I also agree with the above. The jacks are limited in stroke so blocking under the tires and the jacks are sometimes needed.

Depending on how long the unit will be parked, I always put something under the tires.

As mentioned I pre level the unit side to side using blocks BEFORE using the auto level. I don't think the manuals states a difference between hydraulic and electric but it does say not to lift the tires off the ground with the leveling system.

And another agreement to shorten the jack extension even on relatively level sites. I also pre-level side to side with blocks since I've been in two KOA sites where the auto-level lifted the wheels off the ground. For what they weigh, well worth having. The hydraulic auto-level sequence continually raises side-to-side to reach level - never lowers. Often results in longer jack extension than I would like.

I have no intelligent comment about the bricks, but I use 4X4 and 2 inch thick cribbing. I block the front allowing for a 3 inch stroke and manually level front to back. Then I crib as close to the unextended jacks and then activate auto level. My belief is the shorter the stroke the better.

My current RV park requires these under the landing gear even though the pad are concrete... probably to save the concrete....

I use them to level, then I use the bricks like you have under the stabilizers and front landing gear if need to finish leveling. They come in very handy on soft ground. I have also used them to level pick-nick tables and my folding chairs.

How many of you that have this type of block and use the rubber pad under the blocks? What is the reason for the rubber pads? I have never used the rubber pads.

The rubber pads can be used to keep them from slipping. We were just in a site that had been freshly top dressed with pea gravel but still unlevel side to side, as we tried to back up on the Anderson levelers they kept slipping and digging in the gravel. We finally remembered the rubber pads and were able to back up on them with no slipping.

My set did not come with the rubber pads and I did have slippage issues. I carry some scrap rubber pond liner for the slippery situations (anything like carpet or door entry mats will work). In most cases I don't need it.
