  • Dash Cameras - Who Uses Them and Brand?

Was doing a bit of reading on towing safety, especially in congested areas. Lots of information on that topic, some I do not agree with. slouch as stay in the right lane. I stay out of the right lane and move one over on a 3 or more lane highway. Sometimes two lanes left if over 4 lanes to stay out of the merging traffic kayos. I also look for bypass or truck routs that are out of the way of the congestion if possible. In most cases the dash camera is for fault finding or to know what happened in case of an accident in the discusion - are there other uses?

First I have an Email into Vision works to see if they have an add on camera for my rear observation system that can record - never added the memory yet. But I don't know if it can record two channels at once.

But in basic use - are they worth it? If Yes what is a good compact unit with good high quality resolution? Speaking of that - what specifications should I be looking for as far as resolution and angle of lens, etc. What's a good recording loop time? There are also several mounting systems - what works as I don't want to block any sensors

BTW I have already checked into using the Ford camera system, but it cant be done (for now) and the resolution is not good enough and the wide angle lens is not appropriate (too wide)

Moderators - If I did not put this in the correct area, please move it.

    Thanks Everyone
    Keith

GM was installing https://echomaster.com/ (available for Ford also). These could be integrated for dash and rear view cameras.

I do not recommend Rove R2-4K though they have a huge number of sales on Amazon. I've had nothing but problems with SD cards that Rove recommended and which I purchased. They have their own branded SD card which they try to get you to by at upscale prices. I'm using a Samsung Endurance card and the camera still suffers from corrupted videos. Rove has been absolutely non-responsive. If you read the 1 star reviews, you'll get an idea of the issues - like getting a pop-up that your memory card is too slow if you do not use one of their branded cards

No issues at all. It has worked great, when I remember to turn it on. We have caught some pretty cool pictures from it, no accidents which is good.

I just purchased my 3rd basic Rexing Dashcam. They seem to last about 4 years and then the power source fails (was battery now capacitor) But, at their relatively inexpensive cost, a four year life is not bad. They are simple to install, have good picture resolution and are much less noticeable when installed than other brands. I suspect that the memory power failures are temperature related. The instructions say not to leave the camera in a hot vehicle . . . but, who is going to take the camera out and remember to put it back in? . . . not me!

Rob, which version are you running? I see them from $49 US to $300.

I recently installed Vantrue E1's in both of my vehicles. I like the small size, the app works well, and the small wireless controller is a nice addition. The controller makes it easy to command the camera to take still pictures and/or save video without fumbling with the camera. I also like that it doesn't have a battery (works off a capacitor). The battery is what killed my last VanTrue. I also like that the camera has a setting that reminds me to format the memory card. On the previous Vantrue I'd find the camera didn't save video due to card issues.

Only downside to the setup is the mount. There's no ability to adjust the horizontal view, so when attaching the base to the windshield it has to be perfect.

Camera is powered by their 3-Lead Hardwire Kit. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0B7LRLL14 Powers up when I start the vehicle and stays powered on after turning off the vehicle for a set amount of time (dip switch options). It also has a battery protection feature that shuts off the camera should the voltage dip below a preset level.

Minor, but I also like that there was a polarizer filter option. Having had one on a 35mm camera in day's gone by, I'm familiar with how a similarly-named filter worked on my Canon. (I don't have proof it's made a difference.) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0B2VMYQBL

First one (8 yrs ago) was the “Basic” now $50. This had a battery . . . don’t know if it still does.
2nd (4 yrs ago) and one I just bought are “V1-4K” . Capacitor backup power, better resolution and Bluetooth.
Note that memory cards are not included. So . . . “Amortized price” is about $25 per year.
I thought about stepping up to the version with the rear camera, but unless it will communicate to the back of the trailer, it will just be watching the front of the trailer while towing. Maybe on the next one.

I might just put mine on the rear and watch the Goosebox. The few times I've looked in the rear view mirror there has been a lot of side-to-side rotation on the gooseball with the trailer shifting left/right. Maybe that's just a function of the gooseball rather than a traditional 5th wheel hitch with plate. But, since GD will be looking at front frame flex, be nice to have another data point or two. I just don't trust my Rove. I'll look at the rear camera version though I see the need only as a one time event. Might be cheaper to just buy a 2nd regular dash cam and move existing one to the rear window and then retire it.

ajg617 If you are watching frame flex and other things like that, might be worth buying a GoPro or DJI and mounting it. If needed tap power off the 7 way. I believe you can see the screen on both through their phone apps.

Are you required to run their SD cards or can you use any with the right speed and just format?

Choosing high resolution picture quality requires a high capacity card . . . but from any source.
