  • Truck Sway Bars - OEM, Helwig, Roadmaster. etc, How Big is Enough?

Well I did it again, got myself discombobulated "TMI" on sway bars for my 2022 F350. After looking at airbags and for once good friends here saving me money I have been researching sway bars for my Truck. Right now I am very frustrated at the OEM Ford part number lists. Ford Tremor form has two lists with different numbers, My Ford dealer has quoted at least 3 different lists that keep changing, There are numerous other lists on other forms with various part number. I have numerous inquiries out of what the correct parts should be.

I don't want to get stuck with a bunch of wrong parts when there ere other brands out there - granted at a premium.

Background - I have a 2022 F350 King Ranch cc long bed with max payload. My CCC is 4062lbs so as others noted I have plenty of truck. However I have a bit of a rocking, leaning when on rough roads or high winds. I get a lot of sideways rocking due to the soft suspension - lots of travel. .My old TV - a 2004 dually with the camper package was rock solid in the same conditions - it had a big front and rear sway bar. I do have a fron sway bar on my new truck.

When I ordered my 2022 the camper package(sway bar) was not available due to the 20" tires

So does size matter? I know bars can be made of different materials so size might no be relevant

OEM = is between 13/16 and 22 mm - material unknown and one fixed position $500 or so depending on the parts I need
Hellwig Adjustable Big Wig Rear Anti-Sway Bar - 1-5/16" is chrome molly , adjustable. The model I need is the 7320. It appear to be an easy install. $562 on Etrailer
Roadmaster has 1.5 to 1.75. No mention of the steel and a tougher install per the instructions Not adjustable and close to &1K

Right now with the parts debacle I am leaning toward the Helwig from Etrailer as I know they will make it right if things don't fit. OEM is the cheapest, but is it enough. The link arms are a fixed length. The Helwing links are adjustable and there are 3 holes for stiffness on the bar
https://www.etrailer.com/Anti-Sway-Bars/Hellwig/HE97MR.html Roadmaster is out due to price and install issues

So Who has what sway bar and what is recommended. I need to stay away from the dark side

IMO, and you know what people say about those.....put on a bar that is the same or within 1/16" of oem. There are a lot of calculations that go into complementing suspension components. Ford has already done that. The effective spring rate of front and rear springs plus the size of the front bar all play a part, so I would stick with the size Ford would have put on it if you had different size wheels.
I think those adjustable and much larger bars (1/8" is a lot when it comes to sway bar stiffness) are for people that are changing other components on their truck as well. And that's my professional advice as an electrician...lol

COReflection added a rear bar. I think. He will have more real world truck knowledge.

I did find theses two threads for an OEM install on F350 Tremor's. Not sure why the parts lists are different. I know the Tremors sit higher (bigger tires and possibly a larger spring block)

How did the install go? Is the Helwig quality worth the price? It says it ti adjustable, is it? Did it improve towing experience?. My local ford dealer said it cant be done. Bars listed in the parts list wont fit my truck(too short). To actually track down the parts, I need a vin number from a 2022 F350 with the camper package. Actually I think my local dealer is WRONG. Im trying to contact the guy from the Tremor forum that installed and OEM one.

Keith, both Hellwig and Roadmaster (supersteer i think) are well known aftermarket companies. I don't think you can go wrong with either.

You might wonder WHY they are larger than OEM. Both companies aim to correct a product by the OEM that is sufficient for most but not all owners. Roadmaster I believe is more geared toward the motorhome (AKA SUPER sail area) market thus their components are setup to deal with this issue.

Hellwig shows how to adjust in the manual https://www.etrailer.com/instructions.aspx?pn=HE94FR

Those look pretty adjustable in length to me. Also where you attach to the bar is adjustable. Closest to end of bar is softest setting.

The install went fine. I was told to get the kit for a lifted truck so my supports were a bit longer. Turns out I didn't need the longer ones so I cut them shorter and re-welded the eyelets on the shorter braces. I dont have much towing experience with the bar yet except for hauling some old classic cars but I can tell differences both empty and with the car hauler. Mine are adjustable too. I am currently using the middle holes. The quality is top notch IMHO and I buy allot of car parts.

                  Thanks Everyone
This quest is getting very interesting. I think I have the OEM parts figured out after a dozen or so emails and looking at about a dozen posted parts lists. Ford parts - even the online folks don't have a clue. They lock in on the vin and most wont sell if the vin does not match having a sway bar. For some reason the all think I need the U-bolt and bracket mount assembly, even though the lower shock mounts are there with tapped holes. The last thing I need to sort out is the Link part number. Its either HC3Z-5K484-D or the same number followed by an A. The A link has an offset, the D is straight.

So if anyone here has a 2022 F350 (2021 is OK too) with the camper package (includes the sway bar) could you pop under and take a few pictures and if possible pull the part numbers off of the link and sway bar, I would greatly appreciate it.. I need to find out if the link has an offset.

I know the Ford sway bar will clear the exhaust pipe of the 6.7 - its huge. I wonder how tight the clearance will be if I go Helwig 7320 model.

                  Again thanks for the help.

Me thinks I have this figured out. After a long talk with my good Ford service manager, Adam recommended the OEM. He has not heard pf any complaints. He puled up the ford drawing and went through the numbers with me. He too was stumped on the U-Boltt and other bracket shown, and all the sway bar options.

Anyway this thread is good except for the link number HC3Z-5K484-A should be -D but A will work https://www.fordtremor.com/threads/o...install.15363/

Here is my list with a few notes of what goes with what. Please look it over and speak up if you see anything.

                    Bar HC3Z-5A772-A 1 needed
Bar lower shock mount brackets 7C3Z-5486-B 2 needed
Bolts for shock mount brackets W500634-S309 4 needed

Stabilizer link HC3Z-5K484-D 2 needed It appears the bushings and bolts are included
Nuts to fit the link bolts W520214-S440 4 needed

Frame mounting bracket for upper link connection. HC3Z-5L499-A 2 needed
Bolts for mounting bracket W50084-S439 4 needed Edit W500644-S439 is the correct number
Clip capture nuts for frame brackets W717462-S439 4 needed

So now to see what pricing I can get - I haft to be careful I don't mess up the numbers as I type.

Its way more than I need. In this case bigger is not better. . They do offer a smaller version too - both good products. However for less than 1/2 the costs I can go OEM which should work for me after talking with my trusted service manager. It really depend on the load. Of you maxed out on payload then I agree the Big Wig is a good choice. If you just trying to stabilize the body roll like I am the OEM should work. Once I get OEM pricing I will post back.

Guess it depends if your main focus for this addition is for when you are towing or not?
I would have thought after market would be cheaper than factory.

I would agree on the pricing. Plus the size of the Hellwig bar is what distinguishes it from the others to include OEM. The larger the bar diameter, the more control of the body roll. I noticed an immediate difference on the ride of my truck when I left the driveway with it unloaded. Then I hauled a classic car on my car hauler and that experience was noticeably better too. I would compare the size and effectiveness of the bar, the costs, and the target you are shooting for. Just my two cents....
