  • Towing with 2020 Silverado Custom - Hitch Options

I’m looking for suggestions and comments around my truck and 5th wheel hitch options. I have a Silverado 2500HD Custom and I’m moving from a travel trailer to a 150 Series Reflection 240RL. The truck has the OEM puck system installed and I’m wondering what folks are using for a hitch in this short bed Chevy, a slider or a fixed hitch using the turning point swivel pin box? I’m also concerned about the truck’s height (it’s about 59” from the ground to the top of the bed rails) and having the correct clearances so the trailer tows level, if that’s possible. Would one hitch have more vertical adjustment that would make a better choice? For turning on uneven ground, would one be a better choice. Thanks in advance!

I can't help with your specific question, just wanted to say "Hi" and point you to the Welcome Letter to New Members at https://gdrvowners.com/forum/main-fo...to-new-members It has a lot of pointers on how to get the most from your time here on the forum.

I'm sure someone will be along shortly with input to your situation.

    Again, welcome!

MaqNB , Welcome. There is a lot of information on this forum about hitches, both 5th wheel and bumper. The moderators have pulled some of this information into Reference Material. If you haven't found this out already check out: Reference Material - Grand Design Owners Forums (gdrvowners.com)

I don't have any specific comments on your request, just wanted to point out the reference material and encourage you to start with looking at how much trailer you can pull. Didn't see any information in your post about weights and loading.

JBill9694 Thanks. The trucks capability is not the concern. It has 3400lbs for payload and 16K for towing. I'm just wondering what other with this truck are using for hitches and their reasoning. Thanks.

OK, I'm in the same situation. 2021 GMC 3500 HD Sierra SRW Diesel with a standard box (6 ' 10" and 2016 Grand Design Reflection 29RS. Axle point is 59 inches high with zero load. Don't know the king pin height of the FW at level (maybe someone could help me here?) . I went with a Curt A20 with a pop in picture frame (puck set up) and a roller which give me 12" of slide backwords for maximum turning. The hitch has three hts with 4" of play. I'm about to install the hitch but would like to get the ht correct right away so I don't need to redo the Head set up on the hitch. The B & W was my 2nd choice but the price difference was a lot and I could not justify it. The B&W without the slide has some play (2") back to front depending on installation and is an option if you are ok without the slider and are happy with about 75 degrees of turning radius.

What I need a hint on is "how much below my rails to have the hitch head plate so as to give me decent clearance and as close to a level load as possible"? The truck will squat wiith a total of 1800 lbs over the axle but I don't expect more than 5 inches of clearance. Hope the trailer has the springs over the axles for some additional height.

Thanks in advance for any words of advice.

Oh yah and inre the inquiry from MagNB I believe the new Reflections have the Turning Point Swivel Box which allows you to skip the Slider or Roller set up. Little nastier to get it working by the looks of it though.

That's impressive payload for a 2500! Probably the highest I've ever seen.

As for hitch preferences, if you did a Google search for this, you'd find enough threads to keep you reading 24 hours a day for a couple weeks.

First, you have to decide which style of hitch you want...
              1- Traditional - (e.g. B&W Companion)
              2- Traditional w/ slider - (e.g. Pullrite Superglide)
              3- Air bag - (e.g. Trailersaver BD3)
4- "Non traditional" - (e.g. Andersen Ultimate, Reese Goosebox, etc)

There are pros and cons for each of these. I did a poll a couple years ago on another forum asking which hitch folks were using. 28% were using the B&W Companion. 27% were using the Andersen Ultimate, 17% were using a Pullrite. The remaining 28% were using a mix of several other brands.

CraigyNix, I didn't want to get into the regular maintenance requirements for the turning point or be limited to what fifth wheel trailer I could haul. Instead, I have a Curt 16027 OEM puck system adapter on order. This will allow me to use most hitches that fit a standard bed rail system. This will also add about 2" of height to the overall hitch height. I'm going with a Reese slider and hitch head which seem to have the lowest slider hitch height option with adjustments ranging from 15" to 18". At the lowest setting of 15", plus the Curt adapter height of 2" more, that should place me near 17". The height of inside the truck box is 21" so this should land the top of the hitch head about 4" below the top of the bed rails. The turning point pin box is just under 12" (height). This should allow for almost 8" of clearance to the bottom of the trailer. I'm not sure yet how much the trailer hitch weight will squat the truck but I'll assume at least 2". This will still end up having the trailer nose up so I'm expecting I'll need to rise the the axles (spacers or tires) two more inches to get the trailer towing nearly level. Won't know for sure until all my pieces come in and I go to get the trailer.

OK, I've installed my Curt OEM puck adapter 16027, roller 16550, and the A20 head 16540. It all worked out fine as far as the installation. Little bit fussy in spots and this ended up being very heavey (320 lbs total which gave me 0.5 " of squat right off the bat). Interesting thing is that it ended up being over 19 inches high on the lowest setting! A little unsettling as with 3 inches of squat (based on the OL springs on the truck) I'm guessing about 7 " clear at the tailgate with another 2 at the nose of the trailer..... lots of clearance. Again because the trailer is not near me I'm still trying to figure out how tall it sits at level (I've heard 61 inches from ground to the underside of the front????). Your Reese is not as tall and I'm thinking this was a good choice. I don't have the turning point set up so hoping it's less than 12 " to the plate from the base of the unit. I need to find out if the springs on the trailer are mounted on top of the axles. Hope so as it make the trailer a bit taller. Anyway I'm not going to sweat it for now and I'll wait until my first hook up and then go from there. I'll find out how good my Dealer is at that time. Some big tires may be in the future as well. Thank goodness my Son in Law is in that business.

Craig - nothing to add to the discussion but your signature got my attention. " 2021 GMC Sierra 3500HD - 4WD - Denali 6.6Cummins"

What does Cummins refer to ? Does GMC/Chevy not use Duramax any longer ?

Canyonlight OOPs. Had my old Dodge in mind there. My bad. Sorry if I offended any GMC/Chevy guys or.... any Dodge owners out there. Only problem is I'm new on this forum and struggling to figure out how all the bells lights and whistles work.... for example ....how to change my signature.... just got it.
