The easiest ones were the big spin on canisters that were on our old 2 stroke Detroits. We always pre filled them, they were pretty robust.
I trained on Cummins, Detroit Diesel, and Cat and this is how we were taught in trade school in another life in the 70s. You are absolutely correct that the fuel must be clean where a primer and air bleed would be better for sure.

I loved those Detroits but they leaked oil like crazy through the air box drains so they were never going to make it with modern emissions. LOL

Nice to have this in common.

I do all my own maintenance on the truck. For what they want for oil and a crappy filter, I can do the labor myself and choose a much better oil and filter. It is imperative that every oil change with filter be documented. It's burden of proof on the mfg because of the Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnus...s_Warranty_Act) that the dealer or MFG cannot deny claim because of work not being done by the dealer.

I do all of my oil changes on the 18 at 6K (usually have a bit of % left) due to many others having oil analysis. The biggest issue the newer trucks with EGR, DPF, and SCR have is oil contamination with Fuel due to the regeneration process and EGR. The filter I run is a true 90% efficient at 10 micron filter (Donaldson Blue). An oil engineer took the time to contact numerous MFG and get the true ratings on filters (where they would supply the information) then purchased off the shelf, mail order, or some people shipped them to him a vast collection of filters where he then dissected each one. In some cases he actually found where different packaging, paint, and stickers are all that were different. Internal markings and construction gave away a lot. In one case, he actually contacted the quality dept on a filter due to issues he found to receive a reply that they were looking into the problem (no surprises when he later re inspected a filter to find the same issue).

Very interesting read, unfortunately the keyboard warriors got to him and he chose to stop contribution. https://www.duramaxforum.com/threads...ersion.994055/

I may swap back to an Amsoil filter from the Donaldson due to cost. ($40.40 from amsoil) The 2 pack fro Cross Filters is $51 (Probably where my next ones are coming from if I don't go EaO filter) https://www.crossfilters.com/product...42426482622717.

        Jlawles2 Joseph,

I remember years ago that tests were ran that shown an OEM filter would increasingly filter better over time where the competitor filter would clog and be bypassed, and thus offering no filtering. This is when filtering is most important. It was that moment I was sold to use OEM filters. Would an OEM share details in how they develop a product to an outside competitor? I seriously doubt it. But there are all sorts of claims out there for super fine filtering and miracle oils and additives. None of these that were used in the development and validation of the powertrain.
Having receipts for oil changes may help to show proper maintenance intervals but corporations are ran by humans and they would have a higher level of confidence in knowing the oil and filters used were from the OEM. I believe that would make a difference in covering an issue outside of warranty since the service record is tied to the VIN.

Guest Jim, All filters get more efficient with time. As the large pores plug, the only passages left are smaller resulting in better filtration. Fortunately for me in the Donaldson filter, the original poster that did the investigations also was doing oil analysis. Just before he stopped updating, I believe he was at 20k miles with his analysis results coming in at a recommendation to keep running. With the larger filter that I am running, it has more than 2x the filter media surface area. I do change my filter at every oil change as I plan on running this truck for a few more miles (currently at 89K getting ready for the 90K oil change).

My 2004 has 186k+ on her clock and I know what the inside of that one looks like (not a pleasant story), but when I opened her up, she got rod bearings only and new injectors, then put back together.

            Jlawles2 Joseph,

This is a personal decision. No filter will completely remove combustion by-products, acids, moisture on short cycle and other contaminants regardless of size. Miracle oils with claims to last for 20K+ miles is risky business. I've also seen claims where folks are running their trucks on hydrogen generators powered from the alternator with claims of increased fuel economy too. Their data (noise) showed that it worked.
Since I've had the privilege of seeing the inside of a couple OEMs to understand the process in how a product is developed I will have the dealer change my oil based on the display and use the filters and oil my powertrain was designed to operate with.

My first car was old enough that it actually had an add on oil filter canister, when the car was built in 1957 it didnt have a filter or the means to put one on it.

Boy that takes me back. How many remember JC Whitney selling the steel filter can you put a toilet paper roll in?. The first car/truck I drove was a1967 IH Travelall,3 speed on the steering column (unsinked 1st gear). It had an outer can with a changeable inner filter. Talk about a mess to change. So we go from mileage/time with smell and feel to letting Hal tell us when to change our oil. Boy do I have a lot to re-learn.

                Good information folks

I remember that. LOL. The Willys jeeps used an external filter like your IH.

J.C. Whitney catalogs were like car porn for a young gearhead.

howson In my 2019 I can see the oil life in the FordPass App, and use that to time changes. I have taken mine to two different dealers while in Florida and both experiences were terrible. The most recent I needed to get it done before returning home, so took it to a decent sized dealer that looked to do a lot of truck work, had probably 30 bays with a couple Super Duties with the cab off, so I thought I was in good hands. I clarified with the writer over the phone that I followed the severe service schedule and would need 5w-40, and he stated they had it and I did not need an appointment. Got there and he hemmed and hawed the I should not wait it would be several hours, I said that was fine take their time and I would wait (I was an hour from the campground). When they finished I looked at the paperwork and the amount was way too low and asked what oil they used. They put in whatever is standard (10w-30 I think?). He proceeded to try to tell me that was the correct oil for the motor per the manual. I asked about the severe duty schedule which we discussed when I dropped it off and he went white as a ghost and apologized. Then he said they probably do not even have that oil. Another writer said oh yeah the synthetic 5w-40 you called right we have that. They sent it back and had to change it again. I am over it with the dealer.

Do the Ford dealers in Florida not have Quick Lanes? I have had no issues with the Farmington NM dealer quick lane. They have always asked what oil I want and ask before doing extra service like air filter. They run coupons monthly, Now the Durango dealer is a different story.

familytruckster4 Yep I always like getting the catalogs. It looks like they got bought up and changed https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JC_Whitney https://www.carparts.com/jc-whitney?...E&gclsrc=aw.ds Times have changed. Or is it I am getting old? Well Wiser is better.

The dealer in Naples and Bonita Beach have quick lanes and they do run deals but rarely for diesel trucks. I do get reward points and prices are high compared to other dealers I visit across the country.

This was off of I4 south of Orlando, no Quick Lane there.

That's unfortunate with respect to the dealer. Worse thing I had happen at a GM dealer is them leaving off one locking lug nut on the wifes car. They fired the guy which I told them was extreme. Then they told me this was strike three for this fellow. They purchase a new set of factory locking lugs for me.
Things do happen but I would give them another try, rather than to take it jiffy lube and have them throw in whatever is in a drum, use a less than desirable oil filter and strip out your oil pan.
