  • Fuel Shortage?

I don’t want to trigger a political discussion or create political commentary, please
Has anyone heard any rumblings about potential fuel shortages, any evidence of fuel shortage/availability issues, or any other pertinent info? Obviously, potential fuel shortages will negatively affect our travel plans this summer. Thank you for you comments and input.

Well, prices jumped again, today. We are standing down for the foreseeable future. Applying $$ saved to upgrades to our rig.

There are dozens of reports of a possible diesel fuel shortage on the horizon. Pilot, Loves and Flying J are all reporting supply issues. Here's an article from Sunday.

I have heard rumors of diesel shortage, not sure how much to read into it right now. There are current articles about new semi truck shortages and semi parts shortages. I suppose that could go either way, less truck to deliver fuel or less truck using fuel???
I have not seen any issues so far in middle Tennessee..

I thought about sending a couple YouTube URLs from the last few days concerning the diesel prices / shortages but figured folks can browser search this and look at the various videos. Some are opinionated and political, but you’ll get the idea. It’s scary. Have a trip planned from CO to TN (and back) and while we foresee diesel prices going up, the scarier part is availability. Of course then comes rationing, so for example today in town I could only get $75 worth of diesel at one station, and filled up the rest at another station; kind of makes us wonder if that’s what we’ll have to do going cross country. I think we’ll make more stops to fill up just to provide us a warm fuzzy.

Were they limiting you to $75 per swipe of the card, or $75 per card?

GasBuddy limited me today to $75...finished with another card. Not sure if that limit is new...

If you are willing to invest the time, this web site has a lot of valuable information about oil, gas, diesel, and propane issues. It is published by the Energy Information Administration and updated every Wednesday, Among the information you can find is supplies of fuels by region. There is way more information on this site than you need or want, but I'm posting it because it might just have the information you are looking for.

                  https://www.eia.gov/petroleum/weekly/index.php

BTW... Diesel fuel is lumped in with "Distillate" which also included jet fuel and heating oil.

I might add.. In the upper right are tabs for Analysis, Crude Oil, Gasoline, Distillate, and Propane. Clicking a tab will open pages of specific information about each. For example, if you click on the Distillate tab and scroll down to "On-highway diesel fuel prices" You will see that in the New England area the most recent average price is $6.339 per gallon, up from $6.101 per gallon the week before, and $3.115 per gallon a year ago. If you scroll down further to "Total Distillate Stocks" you will see in the New England area the most recent inventory level is 3.3 million barrels compared to 3.4 million barrels the week before and 8.1 million barrels a year ago.

                  I hope this helps.

Credit cards usually have a limit. My discover stopped at 125 today.

The limit was per swipe. I never tried a different CC. Worth a try. This happened before at a different station, but a local Sinclair we’ve used in the recent past didn’t care whether I was above $75.

That limit will vary by station. So used to it here in California where our fuel prices are always ridiculous. Just not quite this ridiculous. Some stations 75, others 100, still others none. If you need more than that it might save time to go inside to prepay. Unused amounts get returned to your card. If you swipe too many times at the pump, it can trigger a fraud alert on your account and then you have to deal with that. Also, at least out here, the big chain truck stops (pilot, etc) are never competitive in price.

These shortages go further than the Ukraine issue or Covid where land and offshore leases and fuel industry speculation plays a part as well. You lost me when the site you posted had GOV in the URL.

Underinvestment in new energy sources is also a factor in response to all the net-zero rhetoric. All with no immediate alternative.

I was in the Atlanta area in March when the price of gasoline jumped to over $4 gallon and rumors of shortages started, its not a good feeling when youre over 700 miles from home.
