    Yoda's Alaska trip - Its on

    Well it on. Found a house sitter (Neighbor across the street), so Emma stays home to get spoiled. Emma is my German Shepard and has bad separation disorder when I am not around, so having a kind neighbor look after her in the home setting should ease the pain.

    We will leave towards the end of July and I have 6 weeks set aside - could be shorter o longer depends on what we find. I am not doing reservations. Most of you will think I am nuts, but I figure with the high fuel prices and from the other forums I figure a lot of folks are putting this off. So far I have had good luck in finding places to stay

    So why am I posting this - prioritizing projects for the trip

    I am currently working on the aux fridge fans. It took a left turn that I will post about.....something about measurements
    I have a new rear view observation camera to set up and install - maybe 2 hours.
    I have the soft start to install on the AC - Yep I am getting on the roof
    I have the DC-DC project.....that is an issue

    I need to put mileage on the truck - Santa Fe trip planed for the coming weekend - with Emma Should get me over the 500 mile mark....I should not say this but dealer says OK don't worry about it - They have had customers tow frorn mileage i

    I need to build aluminum hold down's containment structures for the generators, and spare fuel cans (10 gallon total) and totes - thinking of 2.5" or 3" 1/8" aluminum angle iron cut and riveted, along with good strapping.
    Last is the packing and map making for the trip - actually a work in progress - but need to get back to it.

    Also where to cross into Canada - tossup between I-15 and and the road west of Yellowstone NP - need t check for flood damage - Any advice

    I have decided the DC-DC project is last on the list for now. I will be carrying 2- Honda 2000i generators (with parallel kit) and have the solar and the truck RV charging system is twice what my 04 had. Worst case I pull out a generator and let the multiplus charge things up. I have the milepost book along with supplemental camping information. Note to self be sure generators run - been a while.

    Questions - should I get the Dinosaur board for the HW heater?
    I have a full set of wheel bearings and races and the tools to repack if needed and extra seals for brake issues. I also have my tools almost repacked - Using to fridge fans project
    Tires are new 16" Goodyear.

    Right now last on my list is the DC-DC project - will take a lot of time

    Thoughts?

    The big thing is we are going.

    Question - I know this is not tech, but should I post about the trip as we go here - don't want to break the rules? Which reminds me I need t get a laptop for the trip.

    I would not rivet the aluminum together. Rivets might work loose and there is no way to tighten them. Use bolts with nylock nuts, add lock washers if you want to.

      It would be nice to read about your adventures. Agree with Brian on the AL. Bolt it with lock nuts. Also agree with you putting some miles on the truck. Many do not realize its the rear diff that also needs to be run in. Vary RPM and load and occasionally do some brief WOT while underway. Friction and break in varies by speed and load.

        Be careful with any fastener. If it can come in contact with a fuel container, it may rub a hole in the container.

          Enjoy your trip.
          As a side note, if people think youre crazy it typically means youre interesting and you do interesting stuff.

            Yoda We drove I15 from Yellowstone up into Alberta at Coutts. Drive was nice with low traffic levels.

                If you can't figure out how to put miles on the truck, bring it down to me. I'll have 1000 miles on there by next week

                YES you should post about the trip. This is something I really want to do and I would love to learn from your successes and mistakes.

                Gong through Canada will require you to be vaccinated (and have proof of vaccination)......and coming back to the US - twice.

                    Yep all vaccinated, and boosted with paperwork and passports. Have mile post book and ordered the

                    Love for you to come along, but we got the 220RK to prevent that - no room but the floor and there is not much space there either. We plan to be outside a lot.

                      Guns. My understanding is that self defense is not a reason to bring a gun into or through Canada so leave your black rifles and pistols at home. I believe you can transport a hunting style rifle through Canada to Alaska with the claim to use it for hunting. What's in season? Don't know.

                      Read the regulations on this to be sure. I would not go to a remote location without a rifle personally but some may feel just fine without one. I read about those folks once in a while.

                        Keith - Jim is right, please be fully aware of Canadian firearms laws if you plan on transporting any. IANAL and no attempt to make this thread political, we do not have laws that allow concealed carry and bringing a firearm for self defense is not a valid reason. You can bring in a non-restricted (think shotgun / hunting rifle) for animal defense in isolated areas, but you cannot bring in restricted firearms (black rifles, handguns, etc.) for that reason. Restricted firearms can only be used at approved ranges, and you need an Application to Transport (ATT) before you arrive at the border to move it around. They will want to know where you intend on transporting the restricted firearm when you apply for the ATT.

                        Again, do your own research, but here is the CBSA page on importing firearms

                        Besides that I'm sure it's the standard stuff at the border to be aware of, food items, duration of stay, reason, vaccine status. Just remember our beer is stronger up here

                        Changing gears, your comment about campgrounds freeing up with the price of fuel, I haven't really noticed that up here yet. If you intend on staying at a campground in Alberta, especially Banff National Park, I would check for availability. Same with Redstreak in the Kootenay National Park (Radium, BC). Both of these parks are very popular and book up for the year within minutes of opening, which was back in January. Alberta parks works on a 90day window, where you can book when your arrival date is no more than 90 days out. You may get lucky though with a last minute cancellation, but I would check ahead... If you want any personal recommendations on some campgrounds, feel free to ping me!

                          Yoda , Read up on Camping with bears, and what you need to do in an area with Bears if it's your first foray into a Bear active area. Things like Food Safes, and food bags hung from trees, and stuff like that.

                            The other moderators and myself have debated the content here. We try to keep the content here technically oriented, and while occasionally posts spin out past that(the Mod team is as guilty of this as anyone) we'd request to try and keep your updates technical in intent. I realize it's a grey area where your mods cross over into taking things across the border, or route selection based on improvements to your boondocking capabilities.

                            We spoke with Yoda about it and he agrees. I think I can say part of why we come here either instead of or in addition to the multitude of Facebook groups is the relevance of content, and we want to keep it that way. Not looking to get into any arguments, and myself and the other moderators are always available if anybody wants to question any decisions we make.                               Mike - no worries. Been in Bear country all my life. Was in Alaska back in the 70's and all through Canada a year later withe the folks. Starting in Illinois we went up and east to the coast (Glace bay) one year and up and to the west cost the next.
                              Beside I am too tough to eat Had a black bear come right in camp at Yosemite as we were cooking s'mores with the kids. We had our air horn handy and it scared it off - usually making noise works with black and brown bears in the states. Does loud noise work with grisly's? I read we cant have bear spray (pepper spray) in Canada either
