  • Lithium Ion Batteries

I have been thinking about changing out my lead acid battery for a Lithium ion battery in my 2020 Reflection 337RLS. First, has anyone done this? Secondly, is the existing system compatible for "drop in" replacement, or is there more to it than that?

Check out https://gdrvowners.com/forum/operati...er-for-lithium and review the upgrade to the converter which will charge the batteries more efficiently if the current one is not setup for LiFePo batteries.

For battery monitor, check out post #5 in https://gdrvowners.com/forum/operati...-do-i-need-one There are other options depending on your setup.

      Good morning Steve and Melissa.

By "lithium ion", do you mean a true lithium ion battery, or a lithium, iron, phosphate (LiFePO4) battery such as Battle Born?

Many of us (myself included) have installed LiFePO4 batteries with great success. In most applications, you can just swap them for your lead acid battery and they will work fine. But you'll have much faster and effective charging if you also switch the converter to a model that is dedicated to LiFePO4 batteries.

If you are indeed considering lithium ion batteries, there are safety considerations such as fire and explosion that must be examined.

Thanks for your info. I plan on attending the GD rally in Myrtle Beach in April. I will be "picking peoples brains" on this and many other questions I have about upgrades and modifications we are thinking of doing.

Having a clear expectation of what you want the system to do for you (and a budget) will definitely help scope the end result. Two of the most significant factors IMHO are if you plan on boondocking (or "moochdocking") and the budget.

Spending money on upgrades is easy--spending it on the right upgrades that will result in the capability expected will require research and asking questions. There's a lot of information on this forum--learn how to search and you'll find a lot to read.

A good starting point are the threads in the Solar and Electrical Reference Material sections. If you haven't done so yet, first stop is the Welcome Letter to New Members at https://gdrvowners.com/forum/main-fo...to-new-members -- it has all the pointers you need to get going on your information quest.
