  • Fresh Water Fill

Preparing to sanitize prior to our first trip in new camper in a couple weeks, and located two things in the manual that seem to contradict each other.

Within the Plumbing section, it says water may come out fresh water overflow during driving, un-level, etc…. Under the Nautilus section on Power Filling, it says DO NOT OVERFILL THE TANK! So how would one overfill the tank if it’s going to come out the overflow?

When power filling water goes in faster than the vent is sized to flow and pressure in the tank will rise and risk overpressuring the tank. You can use the first sign of water coming out as a signal to stop filling.

Water otherwise spilling out the vent is a common no-pressure happening.

Depending on how fast your power fill and if not being watched the fresh water tank can pressurize and possibly be or cause damage (overflow is gravity while fill is under pressure) I have a hose end flow meter I use and when I get close I slow down the fill rate to a trickle until I see the first bit of water com out the overflow, then stop. I also never leave the fill operation unattended.

On edit I see Ted beat me to it TedS

That makes perfect sense. As a systems specialist in a prior life, being relegated to blindly following instructions is a bit unnerving. The more I understand the systems, the more confident I will be in not breaking them!

        thanks for the clarification.

The manual should also state that the fresh tank should only be filled until the indicator lights on the convenience panel , or one control, show the fresh tank is full. This is what was conveyed to us from Grand Design on how to fill the fresh water tank.

Is there a reasoning for that?
By yourself, that is difficult to do.
Been using the water out of the overflow method for...well....forever....over 25 years anyway.

In an email discussion with GD this was stated that it was in the manual, I never looked. The reason given was to slow or stop the syphoning effect caused when the tank is filled until it runs out of the breather , or overflow pipe as we have called it.

I use a water flow meter when filling the tank. Rarely (if ever) is the tank filled completely so using a meter allows me to put the same amount in each time with a degree of accuracy. (Typically I'll put in 5-10 gallons to satisfy the need for water until the next FHU campsite.) I always start with an empty tank, so in a scenario where a "top off" was being done the meter would be less helpful.

I left in 2000. Ended up at KADW flying DVs, after a brief stop at McChord. Returned here after retirement, as cold isn’t really my thing! Good seeing ya here Chief!
