I can see that if the solder runs too far into the free length of the wire.

Well....you chose the life of an engineer...lol. Yes, I have participated in the 'determining failure' exercises with a battery of EE's going over the minutiae of how precisely everything is spec'd to work/be applied/adjusted...it can lead to interesting learning...but I often thought sometimes "ignorance is bliss". I get the same feeling sometimes when driving my old classic car wondering if I forgot to refurbish anything/fix properly that would lead to me sitting on the side of the road.

Well, it would be an option but one I'd rather not go with right now.

I noticed with the TEMco hydraulic crimper comes with std dies and '+' sizes. It has far more dies than I figure I'll need, but if there is going to be a mixture of awg and mm2 between my vehicles and the RV....maybe I'll need more than I thought. While the single indent type crimper is 'ok', I was never really happy with the crimp they provide.

Dies marked 4 AWG used to crimp 2 AWG wire. This might be a little tighter crimp than ideal, but I did not think the 2 AWG dies crimped tightly enough.

Rob, when you reach full crimp (max pressure) , does that crimper release automatically or is it up to the user to release pressure. The ones I used to use at work you would just keep pumping until the crimper would hit max pressure and release. That way you knew you hit a consistent crimp pressure.

Usually full crimp is when the dies come tight together, bottom against each other.

Scott'n'Wendy . as TedS describes, when the dies come together the crimp is complete. The hydraulic pressure is released with a twist knob and the jaws fully retract by themselves.

Ok, the ones I have used for the last thirty years were keep pumping until the internal pressure release is activated. Ensures consistent crimp. Didn't think cheaper consumer crimpers would be like that but was curious.

This is the one I bought a couple of years ago when I switched to lithium batteries and installed the Victron Multiplus-II. I've been happy with it and and will get more experience next month when I add my third 200ah battery. Similar to Rob's comment, I found that for the 2/0 awg cable, I needed to use the 50 die instead of the 70 die called for on their chart. I used it for 6, 4 and 2/0 AWG wire.

Scott - when shopping pay attention to the reviews - especially the 1 and 2 star The Temco kit dies are the correct size dies and the kit includes a full set of replacement seals. Going on several years now and no leaks. The longer pump handle is especially nice and it will fit in some tight places.

                      Good luck with your decision

On edit - BTW its on sale $157 at Temco with free shipping and it appears no tax.

I'm leaning toward the Temco unit that looks like the one Rob picked up. I prefer the open throat design. I was unaware of the lug size differences that Jkwilson mentioned, and I think this crimper will handle those variances.

I was going to say spend an extra $23 and get the larger set, until I noticed your unit has MORE POWER!!!!!!!!!!!. Tim the tool man would be proud. . As for the open throat I have used both and I can see you point. Really did not make a difference when I made my decision. There were more issues with the open throat on other brands that looked similar

BTW - you did notice that unit only goes to 2/0? The other set goes to 4/0 and has intermediate + dies The 4/0 dies are Not available for this TH0006 unit.

I mention this as I suspect you will have some 4/0 cabling, but I guess you can double up the 2/0.

I don't have 4/0 at the moment. But, I don't foresee a full on solar install a'la'Tucson Jim in my future. Something more modest...probably

OK For some reason I thought you were putting in a Multiplus or some other brand inverter in the 3k range, maybe 2500 watt. That size usually requires a 4/0 feed in most situations. But you could be OK as even Victron mentions double up 2/0 in my install instruction. But that extra cable and extra crimps - Hmmmmm still might be cheaper to go bigger - just saying.

                              Be safe my friend
