  • Lug Crimper

Prior to retirement, my workplace always allowed for employees to take home any tool they wanted for a day or two. So I never owned a crimper for wires over 10awg. Now I need one for battery cables and thought there are a few solar people here that must have experience with non-commercial grade crimpers and have some valuable experience. I do not wish to spend the $$ for the industrial ones I used to use.
    I found this
    https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B096X6VSKL/...lig_dp_it&th=1
Anybody have an opinion on this or another recommendation? I am not looking for a crimper that goes beyond 4/0 or 250mcm.

It's a little more expensive, but look at the TEMco brand one. Guy at work bought one and like it (he's an internet youtube research nut). I did look around for a bit but my needs for one diminished before purchasing. The TEMco was the top of the list though and was under $100USD at the time for the Hydraulic one.

Look around there are better prices than Amazon.

I have this old TEMco big boy for when I need to do larger crimps, it works fine, but I know some of the guys have ones with changeable dies that makes a better crimp. That said I have never had an issue with any of these.

One thing to watch closely for is that some less expensive crimpers use dies that are for metric sized sleeves. You can get slightly loose connections or cracked sleeves with them.

I’m in the same boat. I had a crimping tool set that was around $1300 when I worked. It was sweet. Now I just order my wire with fittings installed from https://www.customcableusa.com. Used to be called Genuinedealz. I’m sure I’ll come across a need to repair a wire, or crimp in place, but so far it’s worked well.

I have an older Temco as well, TEMCo DIELESS INDENT LUG CRIMPER TOOL Electrical Battery Terminal Cable Wire | eBay same as that but I do not see it any where else. I like the hydraulic though, easier on the hands maybe.

I will take a look at the Temco..I just don't really know how much you need to spend on a crimper that will likely see maybe 100 crimps in the next ten years. But..I want one that produces a reliable crimp.
Jkwilson John, what exactly do you mean by metric sleeves? The diameter of the die itself or are you referring to the lug it accepts?

Some Chinese stuff has different dimensions, so the crimp fittings we have are a slightly different size.

I use one of these but, rather than beating it with a hammer, I set it in a good vise, put the tool on the vise, insert the lug and then insert the cable, crank it down until it won't go anymore and then hammer the vice and crank it again. https://www.amazon.com/AMZCNC-Hammer...3-c4619ca6be35

I forget about the one my nephew has like this https://shop.snapon.com/product/Term...-(Black)/BTCR1 that he bought to do lugs for electric fork lift cables. He's not had any issues with it thus far. I believe he dod similar to Bob and locks it in the vise, then grabs the battery impact and sends it home.

I have had a pair of the large lug crimpers for years and they still work well . . . but, they are at home and I needed to make some lug crimps while "snowbirding". I got the smaller hydraulic crimper from Amazon for a reasonable price. I did discover that I had to go one size smaller than indicated on the crimping dies, but this tool makes a nicer "hex" crimp than the older single point indentation.

Do not pass go or collect $200

While the price has gone up a bit I have this set and it has done more than I expected. Joseph mentioned it right toff the bat.
                      https://temcoindustrial.com/th0005-v...h-32-die-sets/

I documented the crimp it can do in this thread https://gdrvowners.com/forum/solar/5...-mess-up/page7
Its been flawless and very easy to use. The long handle comes in handy. Also for those odd size terminals you may run across that don't fit a specific size, there are enough dies to get it done.

                      Edit
Whatever you do get extra terminals as there will be some practice ones . BTW TemCo had the best price on welding cable,https://temcoindustrial.com/electric...welding-cable/ It goes in and out of stock,
They also carry terminals of various sizes. https://temcoindustrial.com/wire/terminals/?page=6

Interesting...I looked at the wire from battery to disconnect sw. It is marked....3.3 mm2.....a bit over #8....not #6 as I have often been told it would be. First I've ever noticed metric wire sizing.

Kind of a pain in the rear.

Having worked for the military, I’m familiar with how important tooling matching with connection devices is. I know this application isn’t as critical. We had to record the tools used on combat equipment repairs, and if our tooling failed when it was gauged the next time we’d have to pull back anything we could access. Made it easy to spend the few minutes getting it checked before using it. We had to use different dies for different suppliers of the same part, because when they tested their parts, they specified what dies to use. Makes it hard for me to trust the cheap sleeves and crimpers. Wish I could be like most people who are fat, dumb and happy with regards to crimping.Gives me one more thing to worry about.

That is a long discussion. In some cases soldering can lead to a too stiff connection suspect to movement and vibration. If I remember correctly there are several threads here on that topic.
