  • 2022 F350 Auxiliary Reverse Truck Lighting Project

First - Thanks Rob Cate&Rob for getting me started researching another way to spend money . I am looking for adding reverse lightning for hooking up in the dark

First some background. On my traded 2004 F350 dually the reverse lighting from the stock tail lights was dismal, so I added a set of KC aux reverse lights to see behind me around the dually hips. Keep in mind the or did not have the fancy reverse camera - just the sensors which saved my hiney more than a few times. In Rob;s 2022 F350 thread he ran across an LED lightning site that has what appears to be an excellent set. https://www.f150leds.com/collections...e-bar-kit-pair

So this got me looking at what others offered and that lead to questions I have not found answers for.

First question - I got the LED headlight/taillight/fog option. However I don't have a clue as to how bright the LED reverse lightning is and what the rear view camera sees at night.I believe the truck still has the reverse sensors. I don't know the if high mount bed light will work to see the 5th wheel hitch at night. So can someone that has the LED option let me know if the reverse lights are adequate (does the light in the top stop lamp turn on in reverse?), or if additional lightning is possibly needed.

My night vision is not what it used to be. However I can tell you from my Georgia trip that the Trailer reverse lightning I added was a huge help several times on the trip backing into several spots at night.

The lightning kits I am looking at can be wired two ways. On is to tie into the RV 7 pin plug wiring so when the truck is in reverse the lights come on - OR - be wired into an up-fitter switch and turned on when I want. This could be a benefit or a curse, especially if I forget to turn them off before hitting the road.

Benefit is they could be used as work lights if wired to the up-fitter switch. The light pattern should extend under and partially to the trailer sides when on so I can see the DW. The kits appear to draw about 10A-12A total (60W pair with side cast led's) so I need to verify that the reverse circuit could handle them. On my 04 I had to use a power relay. The seller says it will work tied directly in. My trailer reverse lights are wired using a relay, so should not pull more than say 2 amps (relay current)

So the second questions is if additional lightning is needed, which way should I wire them up?

Thanks for any thoughts on this.
    Keith

The hi-mount camera in my 2020 has selectable general rear view and a closeup rear view good for hitch view. I have not done night hitching, so I don't know how well the high mount cargo light lights the hitch. Did you get the rear cargo bed lights?

Yoda I haven’t done a lot of hitching at night, but I find the led reverse lighting good enough that I've never thought about adding more (and I have in other trucks as well). The led lights in mine included bed lights along the side as well as the cargo light in the CHMSL.

I think so Ted, but I would need to double check. I got the KR for the seating/interior color and it comes with a lot of other stuff.

Then I might be good as is. Maybe I should put this project on the back burner until Rudolph gives me my truck back and I see what I have. I'm sure the lights aren't going anywhere.

          Thanks

It may be that you want to add lighting to the back but I’d certainly hold tight until you get it and see.

I think if you do the upfitter switch and need to have additional lighting, you will be able tell that they are on with the mirrors. Also, I found a video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5j_DrJS_p0 and if I see correctly at 6:24, do the upfitter switched have lights on them to indicate that they are on?

Good question Jerry - I don't know. Something more for me to read up on.

Wait till you get it. Our camera mounted up high on the cab lights up the whole truck bed quite well. It's a Dodge but I'm willing to presume Fords are similar and from what Neil says its sounds like they are.

On another note, other than a family emergency, I can't think of why I would hook up in the dark.

On my 2019 the switches light up when you turn them on.

That answers one question. If I do need them I will be wiring to an up-fitter switch. Also on my Brother label maker I found it can do 2 lines in a short spot to actually label the switches. It was over at Irv2 where they mentioned how.. You have to use the wide tape and they have lots of color choices out now.

Now if Rudolf would only give up my truck. Last time I ordered one it only took a month to schedule (had it in 7 weeks from order date) - were at roughly 2 months now with no word.on build date - just the order confirmation. Then again I believe they had a holiday shut down.

                          Thanks again everyone
