  • Interstate Highways To Avoid - Nominations

For the most part, our travels have been fairly smooth when using the interstate highway system. Road repairs and reconstruction are inevitable, but in our limited time towing an RV, we’ve come across at least two sections of the interstate highway system that we want to avoid on future travels - even if it means a lengthy detour.

The first is IH 20 through Shreveport and Bossier City. Saying the highway is rough is like saying a hurricane is a light breeze. When going east again, we plan to try IH 220 to avoid the worst part through downtown.

Returning from our most recent trip, we found that the right lane of IH 40 from Williams, AZ to the Texas state line rattled our nerves as much as our trailer. We were lucky to have periods of no traffic when we could use the smoother left lane without slowing any other eastbound traffic.

These sections of interstate have been in bad condition for years and are not likely to be reconstructed in the foreseeable future. I would like to hear others least favorite sections of interstate highways. When it comes to towing a trailer across rough roads, I think Charlie Daniels was on to something:

    ”I think I'm gonna re-route my trip.
    I wonder if anybody'd think I'd flipped,
If I went to LA via Omaha!“

I nominate I10 from Beaumont east to Baton Rouge.
Also I55-I240 around Memphis was horrible (might have just been the traffic due to the bridge out at the time).

I heard that I10 has improved through LA.
How log ago are you talking about.
I20 is recent and it is terrible.

Also if the right lane is bad, Ill use the left lane.

Been a year or so, but I grew up in Louisiana, so I have faith that if it's smooth it only last about 6 months.

Even the north bypass I220 at Shreveport is bad, but not as bad as straight through,, Also I 20 at Vicksburg is bad, Traffic wise I 25 / I40 is bad in Albuquerque (stay away at rush hour) I stay out of Dallas completely taking the north bypass 82 - yep a bit north but much easier driving. We angle down to I 20 on 69. As for I 40 from LA via Omaha I hope you like semi's and rutted section of roadway. I-40 is the primary truck route across the US.

I-75 in Michigan, both N or S bound near the Ohio line, milemarkers 5 - 15. Years ago the state repaved miles 15-20. A couple of years ago they did 0-5. It's a piece meal project that makes no sense.

I-69 from Flint to Charlotte has been a mess for a long time. I am beginning to wonder if any of the companies in MI actually know how to pour concrete ?
There used to be a stretch of US23 North of AA that was over 40 yrs old and still in decent shape, now we are lucky to get 10 yrs out of them.

familytruckster4 -- I nominate every interstate with concrete. Even new sections of I-75 south of Macon with concrete are noticeably less smooth than pavement.

East bound and a lot of west bound I-40. East bound is a train wreck through Arizona and New Mexico. Left, right, in the middle. Doesn’t matter.

BR549, I'm thinking you would have a shorter list if you had asked for routes that were a pleasure to drive.

We could hijack this thread with just Michigan roads. We won't, but we could.

To be honest I haven’t been on interstate that didn’t need work. But I would say I70 through Indiana was worse than most. That was 2019, hopefully it has been repaired.
