I believe the thought is if the driver wants high beams then fog lights are not needed. This however was flawed thinking since the headlights lights were inadequate on my MY15 GMC in both high and low beam. Since most driving is done on low beam and its unlikely you will be driving over them while towing I would suggest you use the fogs while using the low beams. These Morimotos are extremely bright and will not cause issues to on coming traffic.

The next step for me was to buy the Morimoto LED headlight bulbs where not having the fog lights on high beam was not an issue.

I hate oncoming traffic running both fog lamps and low beams. It's too blinding bright. Driving in fog even high beams alone are too bright for the driver.

Use fog lamps for driving in fog.

As normally wired, fog lamps can be turned on when the low beam headlights are on. They cannot be on by themselves or on with the high beams. Fog lamps are (historically) yellow and close to the road. Latest versions in bright white LED are obviously changing the original intent as these would not be very useful in fog.

        Ted,

I have never had anyone flash me with my fogs on. They are bright but are parallel and low to the road. Morimoto did a great job with these lights where the light pattern is rectangular by design.

          Hi Rob
For the fog lights or I call them driving lights, the easiest way to have them on when using high beams, is through “FORScan”. The computer program Ford uses. You can enable this in the PCM Settings.

I had the Ghost Screen for the DPF Turned on so I know when my diesel will go into Regen, by FORScan.
Look thru the Ford Forum’s, or FTE Forum. There is a lot of information out there on this. Chevy, Dodge also have programs that can do the same thing.

A dealer could also do this for a $$$ of course.

          • I have flashed oncoming fog + driving lights. I'm always ignored. 😬

Tried fog lamps with low beam and find marginal improvement. If something would show up in the fog lamps, it's too close to avoid at normal highway speeds.

My current f350 headlights seem to be pretty good. Better than my previous f350.

            • Personally Ford has gone overboard on the new headlights and they are too bright and mis aimed or never corrected when trucks are leveled.

The NTSB should have a standard for how bright headlights can be.

              • Actually, I believe that they do. My 2019 had a recall to tune the high beams down a bit.

Part of the problem is that trucks change angle significantly between empty and fully loaded. There is no compensation in the headlight system for this change in angle. The brightest oncoming headlights are usually from a truck towing a trailer. Watching the flow of oncoming highway traffic on any highway, almost half the headlights are now the whiter LED versions which are usually more distracting than the older yellower headlights.

I have a friend who regularly tows a horse trailer with his F250 with factory LED lighting. He says that he often gets flashed from oncoming traffic for "using his high beams" when towing the trailer, but almost never when not towing the trailer.

                  • Cate&Rob Rob, Most of the ones in my area that are blinding people are level pavement non towing queens. I'm a bit surprised that the big 3 have not introduced self leveling headlights (they have been around for 20 + years) to help account for towing changes.

With the new full size headlights on the Fords, its hard to tell when they are on HIGH. Also the new HIGHS have such a long range (especially on leveled or trucks towing) that people do not realize they are blinding oncoming traffic. With the back roads around here, most people turn on the HIGHS and forget to turn them off for oncoming traffic. More than once I have flashed someone only to have them flash the LOWS at me. I guess they do not know what that little blue light on the dash is for.

                    • We drove our truck to AL on Christmas Day, without the 5er. It was dark when we came back to TN. When we got onto Hyw. 65, I got flashed several times running low beam with no fog lights. It is hard to tell with the newer lights if they are on bright or not. My daily driver is a 1998 F150, if I am out at night I can tell a huge difference between the headlights on it and the new truck.

                      • Part of the problem is Ford chose to have 4 lights on during low beam which many would think the high beams are on. I've noticed a large dispersion of light when driving toward these trucks. Modern design directs the light where its needed without blinding on coming traffic. Even for bright LED lighting.
If you nose into a closed garage door at night, the drivers side lights should be aimed lower than the passenger side lights if set up correctly. Ford may have chose to have the four lights on for low beam since the front grill and headlight assembly needs to be removed to change a bulb. One bulb out would still avoid a ticket.

                        • The more I learn about LED & HID headlight alternatives . . . the more confused I get! Thanks to Guest Jim, LOL!
There certainly are many similar aftermarket alternatives !!!

What is for sure is that the base headlight system in a 2022 F350 does not live up to the rest of an otherwise excellent truck. (See attached)

As Jim has noted, all four headlights are on for all configurations including DRL. Why would they do this ? There is a very slight intensity difference between DRL and low beam . . . but, hardly enough to notice. It is possible to have just the Parking and Fog/Driving lights on, which might be an alternative. Changing out the main headlight bulbs is complex (but doable). Changing out just the lower Fog/Driving bulbs would be easy.
